"THE BALSAM"

We invite you to The Balsam, a monthly gathering in Santa Fe for moonlovers and stargazers. We aim to build a creative community around the lunar and astrological cycles.

What is "The Balsam"?

The Balsam signals the balsamic phase of the lunar cycle, a time for reflection, intention-setting, and making offerings to ancestors and the divine. Reflection, intention, and offering are the three pillars of this community gathering. As pillars are meant to support something, we nod to the other signification of “balsam”: healing. We hope that we can contribute to our collective healing in community reflection, intention, and offering.

We expect our meeting format to take shape organically over time, especially as our community molds it, but here’s what we have planned for our NEWEST gathering on November 12, 2023 from 3-5 pm at the Santa Fe Universalist Unitarian Congregation at 107 W. Barcelona Rd. in the Fellowship Hall.

What happens at "The Balsam"?

  • Introductions

  • Sam and Lindsey will talk on the upcoming lunar cycle and any notable astrological transits.

  • There will be time for creative solo reflection after the talk. Please bring any supplies you might like to make a tactile “moon board” (lunar mood board), like magazines, tape, glue sticks, crayons, pencils, scissors (please refrain from bringing paints or liquid glue that could stain the carpet). If you have abundant supplies, you could bring them to share! Alternatively, you could bring your laptop or tablet and create a digital moon board. We will provide supplies to get you started if you don’t have these items at home. If you prefer to write poetry or journal, we welcome you to bring your favorite writing tools. Any quiet, solo engagement is welcome during this time.

  • Anyone who would like to share about their engagement will be invited to do so.

  • We’ll create a temporary community altar: bring a ritual object of your choice representing your reflection, intention, or offering. Your ritual object may be something that represents what you are releasing or calling in. It may also be an offering to an ancestor whose death anniversary or birthday is arriving in the coming lunar cycle. That offering might be a piece of fruit, flower vase of flowers, or beautiful linen. You will get to take home whatever you bring, or offer it to someone in the community.

  • Lindsey will facilitate several community singing exercises. These will present an opportunity to collectively offer our voices to each other and our cosmic community (the planets—the sun and moon, the constellations far beyond). If you do not consider yourself a singer or feel shy about this exercise, there is sacred space to hold and witness the group silently. Also, like any group endeavor, practice opens new avenues of improvisation and confidence, and you may find that you wish to join your voice to the others’ over time. Lindsey has facilitated this practice with many different groups, and something meaningful has always emerged. Vocalizing in community is older than history and has proven effects on nervous system regulation. Spiritually speaking, singing together is a way to mark time, reflect, intend, offer, and nurture our souls under the balsamic moon.

  • Sliding-scale discounts are available based on financial need. Tickets are $25. But TWO discount coupons are available. When you place your order and would like a $5 discount, use BALSAM20. For a $10 discount, use BALSAM15.
