“Do No Harm”

In the US, on Monday, we’ll celebrate the birthday of one of the world’s greatest drum majors for justice, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Thursday, there’s a tense aspect between spirited Mars and tedious Saturn that makes me think of a similar placement between those two planets in Dr. King’s astrological chart.

Dr. King had a forceful opposition between his Mars in Gemini and his Saturn in Sagittarius. (Yes, Dr. King would be having his third Saturn return now had he lived.) An opposition often highlights how we experience a dynamic tension or challenge with others. His Mars-Saturn opposition found brilliant expression in Dr. King’s practice of ahimsa. That’s the Sanskrit word for nonviolence or to “do no harm.”

“Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon. Indeed, it is a weapon unique in history, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it,” according to Dr. King. It allows for the Saturn principle of taking a stand with Martian action.

With the square between Mars and Saturn, we have an opportunity to use Saturn’s grit to take action without damage to others or ourselves. This impulse toward harm happens because we become impatient with how progress is made. Or we’re frustrated by not being understood. But that’s when you have to keep keepin’ on with more concentration and determination. Mars and Saturn don’t necessarily make an action pleasant or easy. They make clear an action is necessary. You have to be willing to own the hard stuff.

There’s a similar message suggested by the other square on Thursday between the Moon and Sun. The Last Quarter moon is all about tidying up loose ends and assessing what must happen to create new growth. We might feel a concentrated effort to convert life lessons learned into new adventures.

It’s only natural to feel relish the enthusiasm of a coming change. But diligence and vigilance is the name of the game now. Don’t let impatience get the best of you. That’s where you could do the most harm, especially to yourself.

Read on for the SkyCodes for your particular moon, ascendant, Sun or key planet of your chart.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

You will have to be patient about how you speak with others about a delicate matter. It might feel similar to driving on ice through a blizzard. Proceed with caution and determination. Sensitivity, of course, will be needed. But more important is to know that you do have the faith and determination to see yourself through a thorny conversation. Rushing is where you’ll probably mess up. Take one moment at a time and you’ll be fine.

Affirmation:
I move through a difficult situation with deliberate confidence that all involved will be blessed and stronger from it.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Setting limits with the wastefulness of friends or groups might earn you a reputation as a tightwad or hardass. But the only way that you’ll truly earn that title is if you forget you’re all on the same team. You can make boundaries clear without sounding like you’re delivering a sermon. Or like you can’t be bothered with people’s foibles. Speak from the heart, and then speak like you want everyone to stay calm. Not like they’re slow or you have to be the grown-up.

Affirmation:
I work with peers and friends to tighten up excesses that easily could be my own one day.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Martial artist superstar Bruce Lee once said, “Empty your mind. Be formless. Shapeless. Like water. You put water into a cup. It becomes the cup. You put water in a bottle. It becomes the bottle. You put water in a teapot. It becomes the teapot. Water can flow. Or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” That’s how you can use the power of the current planets. Like water wearing down a rock, drop by drop, tackle your goals. Or using the principles of nonviolence, let any aggressor work harder than you while you stay in your flow. For some folks, just you being yourself is resistance. That’s their problem. Not yours.

Affirmation:
I stay in flow of who I am and what I must express. Others take shape around that.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

A pause doesn’t have to mean paralysis. But maybe you can’t move from fear or due to certain constraints. Regardless, that’s when you have to become a master at working within limits. A true master at something can usually do more with fewer elements than most folks, like checkmate you in a few moves or with only a pawn. Embrace any restriction as an opportunity for greater mastery. It doesn’t matter if it’s your work, social calendar, or emotions. Discipline requires you to become a disciple. You don’t have to yield to a person. (Lord knows you’re reluctant to lose your independence.) But suit up with values that make you grow. You will be surprised by how your limits fall away.

Affirmation:
I align myself with my core values to better master who I can be in this world.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Don’t lose heart. You might fear that you’re either losing ground or not gaining new traction with your goals fast enough. A setback doesn’t have to become a defeat. Instead, think about what must be sacrificed for more focus. Strip down more to the essentials. It might be uncomfortable at first. You will naturally have doubts. Things still might not appear to move quick enough. But you’ll make up for the discomfort with renewed energy and forward motion toward your desires.

Affirmation:
I focus on the bare essentials to draw in greater energy for the tasks I will accomplish.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Some people just won’t or don’t get where you’re coming from. The easy way is just to write them off as silly or stupid. But pay attention and learn from their resistance. This doesn’t have to be about convincing them. You might not be able to do that. You could learn more about what you’re not willing to see, though. Perhaps their resistance to who you are or your aspirations come from some tension they sense in you. For instance, if you’re always fearful that someone might tread on your independence, then everyone’s a suspect for robbing you of something that’s barely in your grasp. When you’re truly solid on your square, you’re not as ruffled by anyone’s resistance. You know in due time where you’re going to be and from where you’ve come.

Affirmation:
I embrace all resistance as an opportunity to release more of who I must be and where I will go.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

When gospel songs talk about the “by and by,” they’re not always talking about heaven. My Cancer great-grandmother used to say, “Just live long enough, son.” Now that I’m a little older, I appreciate what that by and by means. To paraphrase poet Ranier Maria Rilke, sometimes you have to live the questions before you can get to the answers. You have to stumble around with the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing what you’re doing to arrive at true knowledge. This might be what you’re feeling with a relationship. Or how things are playing out at work. But don’t be dismayed by that stumbling along. You’ll figure it out. Just keep at it.

Affirmation:
I will live through the disquieting questions of my life to bloom the answers.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

Author Tim Ferriss recently wrote on his Facebook page, “‪The more voluntary suffering you build into your life, the less involuntary suffering will affect your life.” Someone rightly asked if Tim were encouraging trauma and pain. It’s a fair question. You also might question the wisdom of such a statement. But suffering doesn’t have to mean seeking out pain. That’s too much. Suffering might be better described as self-imposed stress or discomfort. Become better friends with that stress and that stress will become less of an enemy. Yet, don’t abuse yourself. Or allow anyone else to abuse you, your time, or energy.

Affirmation:
I choose to bear some stresses to withstand better the burdens I haven’t chosen.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

In competitive games, it’s deceptively easy to shift focus on your competition’s way of playing the game rather than your own game plan. Perhaps this is happening to you in real life at work or even with a loved one. You’re likely not sticking to any game plan if you’re flustered. Once you’re centered on what you desire, you can pace or outpace others without merely reacting. Precision without a plan is just practice. You’re in the game now. Brush up on that plan.

Affirmation:
I play the game of life more on my terms than what others try to set for me.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

“Let go, let God,” is not the statement of full surrender it appears to be at first. It’s really a declaration to make room for life, grace, or luck to take hold AFTER some work has been done. For instance, a farmer can do everything that’s required to have a crop, like the planting, watering, etc. She’s prepared the ground to let nature do her thing! That’s what you’re doing. So, you’ll have to ease up a little, if you’ve been doing the work. Your anxiety about improvement won’t make you move along any faster. Once you’ve been on point, move off that point to another. That’s how you make a line of progress.

Affirmation:
I make a line of progress when I ease off one point I’ve worked well to move to another.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

We like to talk about owning things. But some things might own you. A paycheck from a job can own you. Debt can own you. You can lose your very soul by “owning” a business. There can be smaller things that own you, too, like your cell phone. Chances are that whatever’s owning you is also draining you. Most things we-own-but-really-own-us don’t give as much energy as they take. What’s got you on lockdown? And do you have an emancipation plan? Work on one, if you don’t. Perhaps the only exceptions are most pets. So, you don’t have to give up Spike or Fluffy.

Affirmation:
I am free from what owns me.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

As much as you like to be on the go and quick on the draw, you also like the idea of a baseline or home base. It stabilizes you enough to honor your wanderlust and adventure. You don’t have to fear routine and comfort, then, will swallow you whole into a tedious life. The problem is when you lose an authentic connection to those daily markers. But you often have a choice. You can change those life structures up. Or you can abandon them completely. The last option will likely leave you rootless and afraid. The first option gives you power and solid grounding from which to soar. It’s certainly easier and less of a headache to walk away. But you’re only deferring inevitable pain. Meet the challenge to anchor and rise toward new heights. You only have to fear impatience.

Affirmation:
I patiently design the architecture of my daily life to inspire me.
