In 2015, Zyon Gray was among the first recipients of a diversity scholarship at NORWAC for people of color and the LGBTQ community. He was my roommate at the conference and had a great time there. Last year, Zyon returned to NORWAC without a scholarship, and roomed with a 2016 diversity scholarship recipient. His room also became a meeting place for other diversity scholarship winners.
I’ve also seen and heard other stories of collaboration and connection from people who come from traditionally marginalized backgrounds. All at NORWAC. All within the last year. And that’s how the magic of change happens. Some folks fear that if you cut someone a break, then he’ll become dependent on handouts. Zyon and other recipients show how untrue that is.
Last year, NORWAC had its biggest showing to date. It also had more people of color in attendance and presenting, including two Black women, than I can recall at any astrology conference, including UAC, in the last 10 years. Perhaps EVER!
For the last two years, I’ve asked many of you to make a donation for a change. And you did. I’m asking again. But this year, I want you to know the change is happening. And you can make even more happen.
The 33rd Northwest Astrology Conference in Seattle is happening on May 25-29, 2017! We’re offering about ten full and partial conference registrations to astrology students who are underrepresented at astrology conferences. We also have about $300 to assist with food or lodging. (If we exceed our current scholarship fundraising goal of $3500, we’ll be able to give more!)
Qualified applicants, of any age, can be physically challenged, a member of a historically marginalized ethnic, gender or sexual minority, or an intersection of any of the above.
Statements and applications should be sent to Samuel F. Reynolds at firstname.lastname@example.org by April 15th, 2017. Please feel free to email with any questions or concerns as well.
We will notify applicants of their awards by April 30, 2017 to attend the conference.
