Jupiter in Scorpio: The Eagle of God

Imagine you’re an eagle flying high in the sky with the Sun at your back and a prairie full of delicious prey bounding about below. To those below, you’re a backlit ominous shadow in the sky, circling. Perhaps some know you’re a harbinger of doom. For at least one denizen of that field, you are. For your chicks at your nest, you’re a hero in the making. Others might think you only a passing cloud. You might ignore them, and they will ignore you. Yet, you see all, and see deeply.

All of this, along with the feelings for all imagined here, would be like Jupiter’s 13-month sojourn through Scorpio on Tuesday.

The eagle is a bird associated with Jupiter in Greek and Roman lore. One source says that the sky hunter was welcomed by Zeus as a good omen just before his war against his father and the Titans he eventually overthrew. Modern astrologers have come to associate the eagle as one of the “higher” manifestations of Scorpio. This is the Scorpio who has transcended the pettiness of her base emotions to spot what’s most important and essential. Combine the two notions and you have a powerful way to appreciate Jupiter in this sign of passionate Mars.

Here Jupiter has shed some of the lightness and civility of Libra to plunge headlong into the gritty, emotional survival of Scorpio. We are more tossed along emotional highs and lows, like an eagle swooping down and up on the creatures living far below where it lives. We likely also feel the hopefulness of light at our back. But we also can feel the chill of a shadow descending on us. We’re tossed between the horror of what we sense and fear and our need to feel like a hero, a victor.

This is partly why I dubbed Jupiter in Scorpio the path of positive motivation in my Jupiter Return report. As I describe the grand planet as “seeking to forge pathways of light, heat and energy in the cold and dark places we may land in…and prompts us to affirm life after facing peril, serious challenges or possible extinction.” Jupiter here is no take-it-easy one. He’s both the good omen and opening through which many of our fears push us to go harder…or go home empty-handed.

But like the eagle, we must keep our eyes sharp and our perspective solid. It’s easy to lose focus and perspective with Jupiter in Scorpio. We can be tossed too much by the highs and lows. We can become too focused on our destruction, like some creatures in that prairie. Or too caught up in our survival, that we can’t soar toward our “higher” selves and feel the light at our back, supporting us.

Last time Jupiter was here from Oct. 25, 2005-Nov. 25, 2006, we were struggling with issues like those listed above. The US was still reeling from a deadly hurricane season. North Korea and Iran had just reached nuclear ability. Pluto was demoted by astronomers, not astrologers, to a dwarf planet. But we also got a new dwarf planet, Eris. Iraqi despot Saddam Hussein was tried and hanged. We also soared to new heights by electing Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first democratically elected female head of an African country, Liberia.

We must keep broad-minded while narrowing our course of actions. We must be able to expect the good even in difficult and dark situations. We must look out for Jupiter’s eagle overhead. Aware and wary. But far from worn down.

*If you’re 11-12, 23-24, 35-36, 47-48, 59-60, 71-72, 83-84, or 95-96 years old, this could be your Jupiter Return. Consider purchasing this Jupiter Return report.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Jupiter’s sojourn through Scorpio will mirror a strong interest in fattening your bank account and wallet. That means a little more than just a lucky windfall, though. It means more doing the work that makes having more money possible. You’ll have to prune away unnecessary spending. Amp up your savings. Consider better investments. Be daring to ask for more from others. Know your worth! You will also must show gratitude for what you have. Folks always think Jupiter will give more money and luck…just because. But you also must show your appreciation for what you have and that you have the wisdom to handle more.

Affirmation:
I am grateful for what I have and willing to work my worth and use my wisdom with even more.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

You will be challenged by Jupiter’s sojourn here to be a bigger, better person. This sounds easier than it will be to do. After all, you’re always seeking to improve yourself, to rise from your own ashes. But that’s usually on your own terms. You’ll have to learn to throttle that habit of “all or nothing.” Or you could go too big and burst! Your understanding of people and their motivations will also grow over the next year. But you will have to balance this understanding with your own feelings. You’ll have to release more of your pent-up emotions, including where you harbor unforgiveness. A moment of delicious revenge will only bring more sleepless hours. Your growth is your sweetest revenge. Anything else will shrink your fortunes.

Affirmation:
I contain all and nothing, free of the need to do all or nothing.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You’re pressed now to be here, more in this moment rather than feeling someplace else will be so much better. Your zeal for more will be well honored in stiller moments. Go deeper, rather than broader. The world isn’t just something to behold. But also something to be held, studied, cradled, and loved. Question what and who you know. Not out of suspicion or fear of betrayal. But because it’s you likely don’t know them well enough. Deep enough. Cherished enough. Know more through your feeling them from the inside out, even in your solitude, than from the rush only to graze things lightly. For instance, when you travel now, it might be better to see a few sites well than to see so many quickly.

Affirmation:
I go farther out when I go deeper in.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Your social reach broadens as Jupiter moves through Scorpio. You have a chance to better understand and deepen your connection to friends and colleagues. Your power within groups and organizations will also increase. But what can block your full blessings now is an insensitivity to other people’s needs and desires. You can be too focused on your own mission and desires. You are not a means to an end. And neither is anyone else. People also are not easily replaceable, even at a professional level. Be patient with cultivating connections with people. You have a real opportunity to reap a harvest of goodwill and support. But only if you give as freely as you can.

Affirmation:
I give freely the goodwill and support I desire from others.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Your ideas and ideals can become a lightning rod for change and an inspiration for others. Or your intelligence and unique outlook can become a way to isolate yourself from others with arrogance and self-righteousness. The first path mirrors your patience and long memory that we’re all in this world together. Ideals and ideas are only guides toward excellence. The building often doesn’t feel and look like the blueprint, though. You’ll know you’re veering toward the second path when you focus more on they and them, even more than you and yours. (And if you’re using “stupid” a lot more in sentences.) Use nay-sayers as encouragement to refine your ideas and insights. Keep your eye more on learning and you’ll be a better teacher and reacher.

Affirmation:
I share my ideals and ideas, trusting all can be my co-creators, even when they’re closed to their own greatness.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

The walls between what’s “out there” and “in here” will thin while Jupiter’s in Scorpio. What’s good about that is that you will gain a greater understanding of how what you feel or know has been experienced and explored by others. For instance, you might find that others have written more on a flash of insight you’ve had. You likely also freshen up your views on the world, whether that’s in the comfort of an armchair or by airplane. What might be challenging over the next year or so is that your mind and spirit can feel too crowded by “the world.” You will likely need as much space to let the rush of the world settle in you alone. Then you can figure out what’s “out there” and what’s happening within. Otherwise, you might feel more stressed or anxious without even knowing why.

Affirmation:
I glide easily between exploring more of the world within and without.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

There’s a subtle yet significant difference between surrender and quitting. Understanding that difference will likely be a key theme for Jupiter’s yearlong travel through Scorpio. Only surrender though can lead to real success, though. Surrender appears to mean you give up and hand over your power to another. This seems like defeat. But not necessarily. You must evaluate whether the cost of holding on or out for something is worth the gain. If it isn’t, it’s best to surrender it up. For example, you surrender some authority to learn something important from someone. Or when you put your money in a bank rather than keeping it under your mattress. Quitting is different. Quitting often seems unexpected to people. But what really happens is that they didn’t plan for their success. Their expectations of the cost and benefit for an effort were shallow in the first place. Surrender to the right things, and there’s not much you will have to quit.

Affirmation:
I wisely surrender when and where it’s beneficial.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Decades ago, when I thought I knew what was best for my girlfriend then, a wise Taurus said to me, “Everyone’s entitled to a life.” And that means that person, not you, must live that life. You should be sure you’re living yours well enough. Jupiter emphasizes that freedom for you in Scorpio. That freedom allows you to understand, explore and manage your own emotions rather than be swept up by the rising tide of others’ feelings. Without that freedom, you can land in a perpetual state of crisis. And you can get good and clever at managing that. But it’s the wrong thing at which to become clever. You actually become manipulative and controlling. All because you won’t let someone live his or her life. Cultivate genuine collaboration and intimacy with the willing and able. Anything else is coercion and not freely given.

Affirmation:
I trust others to connect and be intimate with me from their freedom, just as I do the same with them.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

I always wonder what kind of life Rudyard Kipling lived to describe 60 seconds as “the unforgiving minute” as he does in “If.” I mean, was every minute gangsta like that? Was he trying to pack too much in? He did have a moon in Gemini. Hmmm…. so, maybe. But a minute doesn’t have to be unforgiving. Merciful Jupiter can serve to be a reminder of that as you strive to do more efficiently. But efficiency only goes so far. Emotions, for example, are not efficient, at least not on the surface. That’s true for your own feelings and others. Don’t be quick to sweep feelings aside to get isht done. You’ll wear yourself out or someone else. Think more about feeling your way into a groove with tasks rather than obsessing over results. Your body lives in the world of time. But your soul is timeless. You decide whether a moment has mercy or not. Not the other way around.

Affirmation:
I savor the variable juice from every minute, squeezing and being squeezed in turn.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

A “guilty” pleasure is hardly any pleasure at all. It’s like having a pleasant heart-attack. One thing nullifies the other. With Jupiter in Scorpio, you must reignite what gives you pleasure and joy sans the guilt. Yet, there’s the strong pull toward the past. And then the guilt. All the shoulda-coulda-wouldas about anything or anyone who might have given you pleasure in the past. Like your children, hobbies, exes, or creativity. Perhaps you made mistakes in the past. But you also must recognize that you probably did the best you could with what you had at the time. It’s good to reflect on the past for that understanding. But you’re not in the past. You’re here and your pleasure is still within reach. Grab more and more of it!

Affirmation:
I honor the lessons of the past to seize better the pleasures of the moment.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

The hero in most action movies usually is in the dark about some key aspect of his or her origin or mission. It’s likely that Jupiter’s move into Scorpio will have you unlocking family or childhood secrets. Or you seek to understand better your own motivations. You’re building a surer foundation now. One built more on trust and knowledge rather than assumption or habit. There’s always some dust bound to blow about when you do that. If you’re cleaning house or renovating, then that’s understandable. But there’s emotional “dust” that’s kicked up too. This is all the stuff you might have kept buried just to keep on keepin’ on. Now, you must plant your heels deeper in the ground and claim your turf. That’s less about dominance, though, and more about true knowledge and understanding of your heart and hearth.

Affirmation:
I understand and know better the ground under my feet to reach higher eventually.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

One of the enduring myths of modern business is that communication should be as impersonal as possible. What really happens is someone tries to shield herself from the personal through the language she uses. It leads to awkward statements like “I regret to inform you that the position for which you’ve applied has been filled” like a robot has written the letter and the position was filled by accident. Rather than “I’m sorry we can’t offer you a position.” Perhaps you try to participate in this myth in everyday life and business. Jupiter in Scorpio will highlight how much more personal communicating must be for you. You must learn to stop using words as a shield and sword. Perhaps you’re fighting a war that’s long been over. Now, you must learn to broaden the horizon of your thoughts and words. That doesn’t mean you forget completely about the past. Just the opposite. You use the wisdom of the past to weld feeling with a refined expression of the present. Not wield a weapon to keep the past from being your future.

Affirmation:
I am open to refining my feelings as I express them, not repressing them in fine print.
