Let’s talk about last night’s Scorpio full moon.
This year only one or two countries will celebrate this moon as Wesak, the day designated the Buddha’s birthday. It will be next month’s full moon in more countries, many which follow the sidereal zodiac.
This past Saturday, I had a celebration of my own, of sorts, attending a Sufi dhikr at a friend’s house, led by a Sheikh schooled in the Sudan and other places where the tasawwuf is taught. It was magical and worth the trek back to Bed-Stuy, where I lived until last year.
The Sheikh made clear that this work was about the purification of the heart. Dhikr, remembrance of the Divine through chanting and prayer, was part of that purification. He said it was a way of polishing our tarnished hearts. I don’t think he’s into astrology. But I couldn’t help but marvel at the timing of the event. That’s what the Scorpio full moon is about too.
Many of you will try to use this moon for “witchy” or magickal purposes. I’m not knocking that. But I think an important focus will be missed in attempting to work magic in your life only one way. Magic isn’t only about what you can make happen in your world, like getting the woman or man you want, more money, a new house, etc. Too many people focus on the magic of acquiring things. Yet, they miss that they are the reason and source for all magic that happens, and more specifically, their hearts. If your heart ain’t right, it doesn’t matter how much or what you acquire.
The moon in Scorpio is considered “in fall” in astrological parlance. That moon reflects a moment when your emotional or worldly attachments can be seen to have more of a hold on you than you have a hold on yourself.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why this time is assigned to the Buddha’s birth. It also signifies what would be his enlightenment: the release from his attachment to the world to be and have it all (Taurus).
This is not a path of renunciation, though. Just the opposite. It’s realizing that the source of goodness and of all the things you deem good are not solely within your power and can only have power over you if you let them. Your power doesn’t start “out there” by only supplicating angels, daimons, Orisha, spirits, God, etc. It starts from your own willingness to be vulnerable, to realize that what’s broken in you is not forever. Your impermanence is also a gift.
Knowing transient nature of all things can free you from everything that seems to define you–what you don’t have, what you have, what you’ve lost, or the fear of what you can lose. The Sun in Taurus represents a grounding in Being itself. That can be its own joy.
I know this sounds very mystical. But you likely have had moments when you’ve just enjoyed the Sun on your face and knew you are like its light. Yet, you neither possessed the Sun, had to possess it, and there was no magic you could’ve wielded to do so. This is the kind of unvarnished kind of living I mean.
So, it’s fine to work your magic now. But remember the true basis of work like astrology, magick, tarot, etc is to lead you toward a deeper understanding and ability to be your Self, without all your worldly baggage.
That way you can travel more through life with the “things” that truly belong to you rather than stuff you’ve acquired when you’ve not been “quite yourself.” Happy Full Moon!
You could choose to read these only for “your sign.” Perhaps that might be your Sun, Moon, or ascendant sign, if you’re familiar with those terms and your chart. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that, though.
I would skim through them all and see which affirmation affirms your life this week:
You might not know at the top of the week what you need to affirm. But you might have a sense from the previous week, from a dream or something that happens right on Monday morning. You can also visit this page later in the week to see what resonates. You might also discover I write more for another planet or sign in your chart. I talk more about this here.
My desire is to prompt you to read more for your whole chart, not just what you know or understand your birth chart to be. It’s also possible that none of what I write here speaks to you, and that’s okay. The goal is to open and to explore. That’s the only way we ever truly know anything.
