“Annus Horribilis?”

2016, horoscopes, Bye Twenty Shit-teen, Annus Horribilis, New Moon,

This is going to be a longer intro than usual. Only fitting since it’s the last intro for 2016 and the first for 2017. You can skip it all if you’re only here for the ‘scopes below. But I hope you find this as interesting.

Most astrologers at the start of the New Year like to do forecasts for the year. I’ve also done this for various publications over the years for hire. I’m mostly bored by that kind of work, though. It doesn’t really matter whether I’m writing or reading them. A year is an unruly thing. It’s mostly fueled by our sense of the present and has too many spinning coils to it to give as much punch & detail to the casual reader.

When I’ve read annual forecasts, I’ve rarely read any that had both specificity and accuracy. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done. But it’s often not. Maybe we astrologers pride ourselves too much on our fuzzy foresight than the insight we can derive from looking back and deeper.

Perhaps that’s why I’m more intrigued by a question from a Twitter follower.

Basically, she was asking, why was 2016 so jacked up?! Fair enough question considering all she listed. Yet, let’s be honest: it wasn’t a messed up year for everybody. It was not a horrible year for Donald Trump and all his supporters. No year so far seems to suck for Beyoncé. And this year had great pockets of goodness for me, though it certainly had its serious rough patches. So, the whole year was not an “L” for e’rybody!

Though any year when Prince Rogers Nelson, Gwen Ifill, Phife Dawg, Muhammad Ali, George Michael and David Bowie die is not a great year. I know many cherished folks have died over the years. But a few astrological and cultural tides converged this year that has made this year more challenging than the past. So, we can start there.

Cultural Impact

The cultural isn’t that hard to mine. Prince, Muhammad Ali, and Bowie were part of a generation that fused more of our hearts together than separated us. That doesn’t mean they weren’t aware of our differences. They, like us came of age when segregation walls were crumbling. So, the fracturing of historical differences led to new curiosities.

Bowie, in the early days of music videos and MTV, insisted that they play more Black music artists. He was one of the few rock stars who never forgot the roots of Rock were darker. Prince broke crossover sales records and created music that bridged a generation of Soul and Rock-loving hearts together. He also paved a way for artists to break away from corporate control.

Muhammad Ali didn’t soothe our savage hearts with music. Instead, he fought his way into our minds and hearts with his boxing prowess. His belief in human dignity and justice inspired people all around the world. At a time when much of the world seemed to be most divided, as I had described with Saturn in Sagittarius earlier this year, we lost folks who brought us closer.

Stellar Impact

Saturn’s ongoing turn in Sag wasn’t the only hard celestial pull of the year. It was also that looooong Mars transit through his home in Scorpio. And let’s just say that gory Mars can act more like his violent self when he’s at home. That’s if he doesn’t find a proactive and positive action to take. Mars started his retrograde in April at Antares, the heart of the Scorpion. This star suggests that Mars would become more ornery than usual. And when Mars & Saturn teamed up there during the summer? Fuhgeddaboudit! Both are described as malefics. Here’s how I recently defined these planets.

Last summer certainly brought a lot of shit to the surface. Strange happenings like random attacks of children by captive animals like this or this. (And not just in America as this proves.) There also was a spike in murders by law enforcement and terrorists like Omar Mateen. I don’t believe the astrology of the sky caused these things, though. They signify cultural and natural forces set in motion by us. Astrology allows us to magnify our view of them through a cosmic lens. We only have to take the time to look.

Facing The Horrors Together

Perhaps one benefit of many seeing 2016 as a horrible year is that we experienced more of these horrors together. It wasn’t only devoted fans who mourned the celebrities we lost. A lot more of us felt those losses. A lot more of us are feeling the lost souls from the senseless shootings. In a year when we felt such sharp divisions, we had more moments of togetherness at miserable times.

We must improve at remembering how much we have in common when things are brighter. That can be the better way to embrace the astrology of this year and even next year. We can think about these things when our outrage meter spikes on social media and we’re ready to blast “them,” whoever they are. We are closer to “them” than we might be willing to admit. Losing all these important folks reminds us of that, whether we like it or not.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

All this week might feel like freshly fallen snow. You can feel the hush of the coming year and new beginnings brim with creativity. You could chalk it up to the New Moon. Or innovative Uranus moving out of his retrograde on Thursday. Or that 2016 is almost over. The why doesn’t matter as much as how you will manage it all. Don’t focus on all the elements you can’t control, like other people’s feelings. Work your wonders with what you can. Plan, knowing plans can change. But it’s better to have some idea of what to do with all this possibility than none.

Affirmation:
I harness creative potential in my life with a flexible plan.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Find some time to create your own “Fortress of Solitude.” A new year really has more load and jagged edges than people admit or perhaps even see. It’s a hard thing to embrace. Maybe that’s why so many resolutions fall by the wayside early in the year. People blow into the year with strong gusts of optimism rather than wisdom. You gain your wisdom through reflection, even meditation. Let your mind and heart absorb the feel of 2016 without drinking any of its poisons. Your attention and mind will be full when you can better see how you strayed from your better ideals and intentions during the year. Then you can release all of that to grip new possibilities for a barer, New Year. But you have to feel the quiet first before you can bring the noise.

Affirmation:
I quietly reflect on where I’ve strayed to stay on my path better in the New Year.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You’re more inspired to entertain ideas and goals that will better stuff your wallet. A friend or a group (even online) will better help you with that. Of course, you could study up on your own. But a class or connection will flatten your learning curve. Don’t get too attached to all the ideas that bubble up. They’re not all going to work and some advice will be better than others. You’ll have a better bead on which ones once Mercury moves forward in a few weeks. For now, network and think about how to invest your time and knowledge in making your money work smarter for you.

Affirmation:
I easily connect with others to improve my financial understanding and growth.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Going it alone more often, whether at the job or poolside on vacay, will keep you on the edge without edginess. You like new beginnings, like spring when the Sun starts in your sign. Mornings might have a special appeal now because they’re unsullied by the hustle and bustle of others. The same could be true late at night. Use those more sparse times to plan or do things that put you ahead in some way. You might come across some of your best ideas then, too. You’ll find it easier to be calmer when the day’s busier because you’ll feel accomplished. Maybe even a little tired from doing the hard work that puts you ahead.

Affirmation:
I claim more time alone to get ahead.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Like the bovine for which your sign’s named, you might do a lot of mental chewing on something. Don’t let anyone rush you into a “new” thing just because it’s new. You’re not sold on new. Good, better and best are your dearest friends. To others, at times, you might look sentimental. But you’re right to trust quality. The only way you can know what’s quality within or without is by its durability. And for that, you have to chew, test and savor something to know if it’s real. Do that. “They,” whoever, can wait.

Affirmation:
I patiently hold on to quality before novelty.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Old friends can keep us from becoming “brand new.” And that can be a good thing at times like these. Identity is a far more fragile thing than often admitted. You can lose yourself to create a new self. And sometimes you can lose the best part of who you are. That’s when connecting with an old friend can jar a memory or a sense of yourself that’s being lost. You have too much to offer the world, child of Mercury, to lose valuable pieces. Yes, it’s tantalizing to reach for new beginnings, especially at a new year. But, like the old campfire chestnut song goes, “Make new friends. But keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold.”

Affirmation:
I connect with old and dear friends to keep valuable pieces of who I am.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

Right now it might feel like you’re on the out watching someone else “eat your lunch” inside. Don’t surrender to the envy. Time’s got your back. You only need to have patience and some forethought. For now, reflect on what’s been holding you back. How have you gotten in your own way? Where are you not managing your feelings? How have you failed to manage someone else’s feelings well? As you take stock of these things, you’ll likely get lightning flashes of where you can steer to better fortunes in your life. Follow those, not your fears.

Affirmation:
I follow flashes of insight for where I need to go, not fancies of envy.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

Your intuition can play a larger part in figuring out how to solve small and big problems. You don’t have to go into the New Year doing the same old things. You also don’t have to explain or detail why you choose to do something that just makes sense. Like many, you like your habits and routines. But routines do have “rut” in the word and often in practice. When Life humbles you with her bare wisdom, you move into a “royal” power that’s your birthright. It’s okay not to know how everything links up just yet. That will come soon enough. Have faith.

Affirmation:
I move into my royal power when I intuit Life’s wisdom rather than relying only on my pride and routines.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Your New Year’s Eve might feel anti-climatic. You might already have your new jack mojo working for you. Your resolutions already have resolve and grit behind them. You are perhaps fuzzy on details on how everything comes together. But, surely, you can cut yourself some slack on that front. So, feel the chill. (It’s not like 2016 had any.) Confidence in your preparation and flow is how you’ll celebrate. Toasting to the New Year, if you choose to stay up, is just gravy.

Affirmation:
I already feel new and ready enough for this New Year.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Sometimes you don’t have to shove or push to get something or someone out of your way. You only have to grow. Like a tree does, up and down. Stretch your roots. Let them dig deeper and disrupt whatever gets in their way, just by being. Branch out your intellect and your network. You won’t have to throw shade. A naysayer who refuses to yield to your growth will just one day find him or herself away from the light. You, on the other hand, have only bathed yourself in light, and soaked yourself in Earth. You won’t have to lift a finger to move anybody.

Affirmation:
I dig deeper into a network and broaden my reach to grow out and beyond.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Make it your business to keep your thoughts and words fresh. We all can get in grooves of thought that feel groovy to us. But we might not even know we’re in a rut. Now, when someone says “It’s lit!,” chances are that it’s not. Or imagine if someone said, “Word ‘em up, doc!” after taking your order at a fast food chain. Yeah, that’s the kind of dissonance to listen out for in your own head. You might be clunky at first as you try to describe things in new, livelier ways. No one’s asking you to be Shakespeare. You only have to feel the authenticity of the moment and express that truthfully. Not routinely.

Affirmation:
I express the truth of the moment with sparkly crispness, not routinely.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You come out of your season a bit worn from the wear of the year. You need this New Year. And a breather. It would be ideal if you could go somewhere exotic for a few days or weeks. But perhaps you only have a few hours or a day to get into something interesting. You’re adaptable enough to make that work! In fact, the less you have to spend, the more your creative juices will froth to stir up your paradise. Once you charge up your batteries, don’t blow it all out to ring in the New Year. Play for the long haul, not the spirited sprint. Have enough fun to feel juicy, but not too much to be drained. You’ve had enough of that. It’s time to mark your territory in 2017 and set out to make it remember your name!

Affirmation:
I quench my thirst and stay juiced up for a year with my name written all over it!
