“Grounding”

Happy New Year!

Sometimes when we must make a large leap forward, we have to get centered and grounded by putting a foot back to anchor ourselves. We might have to find practical ways to do that to jump farther into 2017. For instance, eating root vegetables, like carrots, sweet potatoes, or beets, is one way to experience the direct benefit of connecting to the Earth.

Another way to do that is looking closer at any and everything that was neglected over the last three weeks. Mercury rights out of his retrograde on Sunday. Before you rejoice and get all jolly over nothing, think! Seriously. The Mercury Retrograde is not over, if you didn’t learn anything. It’s not over if that argument with your boyfriend could happen again. What have you done differently that makes getting along less of a chore with anyone, especially a dear one? Mercury bounds back into Sagittarius for a few days until he returns forward to Capricorn next Thursday.

We, too, are invited to think about the long term visions of our lives. How do your resolutions fit into your lifetime goals? If you’re only thinking about wellness as a something that lasts a few months, then you’re selling yourself short. Think making bricks for a beautiful building rather than making any shanty-style fixes. That’s certainly the message we get when fulsome Sun merges by conjunction with purposeful Pluto on Saturday.

Like root vegetables, we have to be willing to go deep to go long. Winter is settling in. Now, it’s your turn. Fend off the chill with whatever or whoever keeps you warm. Ride hard with your dreams, both the waking and sleeping ones. Keep your imagination lit. Let your body sink closer to the Earth. Anticipate longer days. They’re coming, though they seem so far away. Just gird your belt with patience and perseverance. That’s how you work winter magic and feel more on the way to making 2017 your year!

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

This week might not feel as new as last week. And I know that’s weird because this is the first week of the New Year. You’re probably feeling more the slush of your feelings and undigested fears from last year now. But YOU are the dividing line between whether this year will be more of the same or brand new. You can choose to believe the same things about the world, yourself, or another and feel the same. Or you can probe whether what your daily beliefs are true. Or ever made any sense. Then perhaps you can begin to sprout new feelings and new experiences.

Affirmation:
I uproot my rotten beliefs to seed new possibilities for the year.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

You’re likely finding out some interesting things about yourself if you’re spending more time alone. Perhaps you’ve surfaced more “dark” thoughts or even an obsession that you’d prefer to ignore. DON’T SWEEP IT ALL UNDER THE RUG OF YOUR MIND! Admit to the more calculating parts of your nature. It’s okay. That doesn’t mean you’ll become more of the unfeeling creature that’s often portrayed for your sign. Just the opposite. An honest look at yourself is the first step to embracing the integrity that is your best trait. You bring the symbolic water of knowledge and enlightenment because you know what it is to be thirsty in unpleasant ways. There’s no shame in that.

Affirmation:
I must first see the dark stains in my own soul before I offer cleansing waters of Truth to others or myself.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You bound into 2017 with loads of purpose and convictions. This makes it easier for you to know what finish line to cross. The only downturn for all of that is you might not have as much patience for folks who aren’t on the same page. Keep a soft focus with your heart for people who still aren’t as clear-minded as you. Or who once shared some of your previous goals or ambitions. You don’t have to pass through every open door by closing it behind you. Some people may yet take awhile to catch up.

Affirmation:
I can be steely-eyed on my goals without hardening my heart toward others.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

What does ruthless mean to you? The word “ruth” itself means sorrow for the misery of another. We get clear images of what ruthless means, like stepping on a metaphoric hand or head as you climb the corporate ladder. Perhaps that’s never been you. And that’s great! But we rarely stop to think what the ruthless pursuit of a goal does to ourselves. This is your time to assess that kind of damage. Like the great teacher Jesus asked, “What does it profit a person to gain the whole world and lose his or her own soul?” Check in on your soul and give it more ruth, not less.

Affirmation:
I am determined and merciful, especially to myself.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

You only have to feel guilty about a pleasure if you have some rule against doing it. That’s when it’s time to evaluate the rules. Or let that guilt go. For instance, if you spend four days on the couch rather than your goal to be at the gym for the same number of days, it’s time to look at that goal. Root yourself down into what’s truthful and scalable. Likewise, pay attention to what’s commanding your pleasure and attention. Don’t rule it all out as laziness. Perhaps you’re avoiding a greater pleasure with a pettier one out of fear. Maybe you’re clinging to the couch because you don’t feel equipped enough to workout without injury. Knowing that, you can get a trainer or ask a friend, for example.

Affirmation:
I create the rules and boundaries that free me…and lock me down.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Some part of “sucking it up” when you face difficult times just sucks. And I don’t mean the adverse times. The practice of sucking it up itself might suck. Folks who never suck it up might have some wisdom to share, though they’re often annoying as hell. These people usually complain the loudest about something and then get the attention they need. Look closely at what you’re sucking up and then ask why. You might be accepting “L’s” you don’t have to accept. You’ll only know if you don’t suck it up, though.

Affirmation:
I wisely choose how and when I concede any inconveniences.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

You’re more focused on other people than you would care to admit. Giving care might even be one of the things you do best. But part of being a good caregiver is to know when someone really needs what you have to give. Perhaps other things or people need that care. You’ll have to evaluate carefully if someone demanding your full attention should have it now. You’re probably ignoring something or someone else important instead. It’s possible you’ve gotten more into a rut posing as a routine with someone’s loud complaints. Re-boot embracing self-care. Then figure out how you’ll redirect the care you can give others.

Affirmation:
I care best and most for what truly needs my attention and energy, especially myself.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

In his book, The Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker says that we must grow bigger than our problems rather than let our problems become bigger than we are. You often need concentration and a willingness to do more for that to happen. No one bulks up any muscle without lifting more weight, more repetitions with resistance, or eating more protein rich foods, for example. Something has to change and get more charged. Eliminate what you don’t need and get intense with what’s most essential to rise larger than a problem.

Affirmation:
I grow larger than my problems with focus and commitment.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Stay in your groove, and embrace your own wonderful weirdness. Spend a day geeking out on your favorite interest or hobby without guilt. Soak in what gives you joy without any FOMO. What you miss out, you can catch up on later. The freshness of the year that’s been with you for a few weeks is not something to take for granted. Your intensity now can help build enough momentum to chill soon enough. Or shift gears to do even more or something else entirely. But relaxed, focused action is where it’s at for now.

Affirmation:
I wholly embrace the groove of my geeky interests or activities.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

You’re more likely to feel you can step away from the dogged pursuit of your goals toward the middle of the week. Lighten up. Laugh with friends and make it a genuine “happy hour.” Don’t think about if who you’re with or what you’re doing connects to the “bigger picture.” It does, because opening up keeps you connected to being a fuller person. It’s when you slow down that you can appreciate more of what’s happening around you. You’ll feel better about being back on your grind toward the weekend.

Affirmation:
I blow off some steam during the week to gain more later.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

There’s hope if you already feel like you can’t keep the resolutions you’ve made for the year. Unfortunately, you won’t often miss many opportunities to beat yourself up. Perhaps you think this makes you tougher and prods you into doing more. Sometimes it might. But, if you think back, the changes don’t hold. Nope, you don’t need to whack yourself with guilt. It’s forgiveness first. Then clarifying what doing better looks like. And, lastly, taking steps to fulfill that vision. Repeat as often as necessary. Sometimes your masochism conceals a pride that you can’t or even shouldn’t falter like anyone else. You can. And, like anyone else, you can get right back up. Perhaps even sooner than you think.

Affirmation:
I forgive myself for falling short of the glory of my goals.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You’re about to turn a corner. You sense and feel it. It’s probably hard to know fully how it looks. You might even have some fear about how it will feel. Or if you even truly want a change. But, as Sam Cooke’s song goes, “A change is gonna come.” You only have to keep at it. Not scattershot, as you’re prone to do. But more like a hunter, hunting a wily prey in a thick forest. You’ll have to use more of your senses. Quiet your mind. Merge more with the thing you seek rather than feel it’s foreign to you. What you seek resonates within and without. You only have to stay determined to strike the right note. You will find that.

Affirmation:
I only need be fully alert and open to the changes already manifesting.
