First quarter moons activate what’s brought together at the new moon. Of course, this last new moon was a super powered as a solar eclipse. So, we’re bound to see more triggered off by what was loaded up and beyond last week’s spectacle.

Something else that testifies to this, too: Mercury. The prime connector planet retrogrades back to the degree (28º Leo) of last week’s eclipse on Friday. Then, as if to add more punch, he joins up with forceful Mars on Sunday. Between a first quarter moon, Mercury and Mars, it’s time for things to jump off. It’s all a matter of who’s jumping and why.

In popular jargon, “triggering” recognizes collective and individual trauma, a thing not often given enough attention in American culture. We thrive more of moving on and over than cycles of pain.

The popular rise of psychotherapy in the mid to late 20th century gave us permission to explore how we’ve experienced deep psychic wounds in our individual lives. But the “political correctness” movement of the late 80s to present highlights how many individuals have experienced psychic pain and trauma as an identified group. There are things that collectively trigger us, like swastikas, confederate flags, or the use of certain words like the “N” or “F” words. Some call this Identity Politics. That phrase has been kicked about a lot recently.

That’s an interesting thing to come up as Mercury ventures back into Leo. Fire signs represent how we experience identity. Leo is how we crown ourselves with the full knowledge of who we are and how we “rule” over ourselves. This suggests that these triggers personally and collectively will challenge the authority and authenticity of our identities.

Clearly, any triggered traumas are to be taken seriously and respected. But the pain also highlights a need for attention and relief. The easy route is to yield to the fear. To retreat with fear’s companion, hate. Or to drown out the horror of it all with screaming matches or by dismissing people as “trash.” Yet, the gold of who you are has always been made with pressure, with some heat. Don’t rush to throw too much watery emotion on the fire.

Cunning Mercury appears to compel us to think and re-think the lessons our traumas have to teach. This requires more reflection than reaction. We must remember that “the wound is the place where the Light enters you,” as Rumi says. The healing allows you to absorb more of the light in whole being. Then it can radiate out to others.

This is no easy task, though. In recent horoscope intros, I’ve talked about the horrors we’ve collectively faced. The individual ones are too many and varied to name. Yet, I’m sure you know the names of some of yours.

Mine surfaces every time I commit word to screen. Writing has been one of my dears and dreads. From an early age, I was tortured by writing and reading. Though I could never deny my fascination with it. I would zone out while reading or writing to daydream about the images evoked. Or to bask in the glory of finally knowing how to read words. But too excited to let their meanings settle into my comprehension.

Those challenges would bleed out in my young hand’s horrendous penmanship. Enough that an aunt made it seem like my handwriting smelled as I scribbled. Yet, I faced the trigger, daily. I copied the fancy script of my sister-in-law until I could make it my own kind of fancy.

I’m still critical of my writing. Yet, I also can savor the effort and achievement in it. That’s what triggers can do. They can lead to dominion. Only if we’re willing to face what we are not to be more of who we really are.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Clever Mercury’s retrograde might have you feeling wobbly about your competence and confidence. As Mercury creeps closer to testy Mars by conjunction on Sunday, you likely feel edgier, too. You might project your own doubts onto others. You give more attention to what’s wrong than what’s right. Leap out of a need to defend what you’ve done and know and into the thrill of knowing there’s always more to know. True knowledge is more like the ocean than the glass of water in your hand that you keep declaring only half full.

Affirmation:
I know my deficits are opportunities to gain greater credits from what life has to teach.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

With big crimes, we must figure out someone’s motive and opportunity for any accusations to stick. A similar thing must happen with success, too. We’ve gone way beyond giving people a metaphorical carrot or a stick for motivation, though. For instance, in Daniel Pink’s widely acclaimed book, Drive, he’s named a search for autonomy, mastery or a sense of purpose as other big motivators for people. If you’re dealing with someone who is undermotivated for a mutual goal, don’t wallow in the blame. Perhaps you’ve not pointed out the right motivation. Or maybe that’s not something you can do and must accept that.

Affirmation:
I provide the perfectly matched motivations for the right people fit for the right opportunity.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

There’s actually a very fine line between self-aggrandizement and self-realization. When you’re pursuing something you want, it’s hard to know which one is motivating you. You’ll have to figure that out. Self-realization is living up to a potential that you know from the pit of your soul. It comes from knowing that you could infuse yourself into something great, like a cause larger than yourself. Self-aggrandizement has the greatness of yourself as its only aim. One brings the juice. The other wants to be the juice or own it. You already got the juice. Make more.

Affirmation:
I am juicy and succulent enough to make anything larger than myself plumper and riper.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

My alma mater’s motto says, “Knowledge crowns those who seek her.” I always took that to mean knowledge (or anything else you seek) won’t come to you. You must go after it and not be a lazy ass. A good motto for motivating students at a party school, like mine. But that’s not really anything to worry about with you. You’re the thirstiest of the thirsty for knowledge. But there’s a nuance I missed in my youth about that motto. Important, true, or real knowledge isn’t that easy to find. To be crowned with knowledge isn’t just to know some things. It’s to know some things in your soul that lift you up, that give you power. It’s not about facts. It’s a knowledge that changes you from the inside out. Now, what do you know?

Affirmation:
I crown myself with knowledge that shows me how I connect more to the world, not from disconnected facts.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

In the end, you can only give anything your best shot. But remember best isn’t only giving your all. It’s also giving from the best of motivations. As I’ve written a few times recently, that does need to come from a grateful and generous place. But it must also come out of you like a flame dances away from a fire. You must do and give what belongs to you. That requires reflection and attuning yourself to your highest wisdom and values. Of course, some values are just stitched within us. But many others are developed and nurtured with thought and practice.

Affirmation:
I am attuned to my highest values to give and do my best.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

You thrive on the prospect of going against the grain most times. You vs. the world. Yet, you’re rational enough to know that formula only carries you so far. In fact, it won’t carry you that far at all. The better framing is you (and some part of the world) vs. some other parts of the world. Get off your “absolute” horse! There are more touches of gray and other colors around you than just black and white. Even when things are at their most stark, think about how you can soften the edges and blend things, like keep connections or similarities with others. You’ll do a lot better with that contra-grain life.

Affirmation:
I create continuums of connection between others, those who seem to oppose what I hold dear, and me.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Over the course of the year, you might not have realized how much rut was in your routines. You’ll probably have great urgency in making those changes. Clear, clean and organize as you can and desire. But be careful of getting rid of too much fast. Like, throwing out assembly instructions before you complete putting something together. Your hurried confidence might mar your clarity on what’s important and valuable now. You’ll save yourself trouble down the line if quiet your mind and tune into your intuition before you roll up your sleeves.

Affirmation:
I tune in to prune and renew what’s become worn out in my life.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Yes, flex those achievement muscles! You’re probably more triggered into things you really want to do rather than things you wish to avoid. Tread ahead carefully, though. That’s not a caution against danger, but wasting time. Assess what you need to keep on top of things. Simple things might derail you. For instance, you forget to eat and load up before your workout rather than be foiled by leaving your gym bag at home as you feared would happen. Of course, check lists help. But clarity on what must be on that check list ahead of time is more important.

Affirmation:
I put as much care into planning my tasks as I relish checking off things on my checklist

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Put your passion for working things out into every detail of your current plans rather than strive to make gains too fast. You’re better off getting your footing than bounding into grand and high-minded ideas. You’ll get there with those, eventually. But working with your hands and having more opportunities to feel the ups and downs of your body will be more rewarding now. Sitting too much in front of a screen? Print out more and work from there, if you can. Or add more senses into your work mix, whether that’s flowers, incense, music, or catching some rays at the beach as you edit the hard copy of something.

Affirmation:
Putting more of my senses into play with my work delights me.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

There’s a lot you want to say and share. Yet, you might feel both tongue-tied and ham-fisted about what to do about it. Here’s a thought: don’t try to do too much at all. That, of course, seems counter-intuitive. But perhaps there’s a lot more that you might still need to detail and think about behind the scenes. Trying not to do too much is not the same as doing nothing. It’s allowing things to be as they are and where they are. It’s letting a first draft of something be just that, for example. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. It only needs to be out of your head.

Affirmation:
I am patient that what I have to say and share will develop to where it needs to be.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

You’re possibly antsy, and that bothers you. I’m with you on that. It should bother you. But for the right reasons. You should be antsy to make good on some of the promises and goals you’ve set for yourself. But if you’re nervousness comes from thinking that you should have the answers now, then you’re kidding yourself. Seeking advice from anyone and everyone on what to do or how to do it won’t get you, um, doing it. Do what you know and trust you’ll figure out more…eventually.

Affirmation:
I start doing what I need to do, trusting that the Cosmos will teach me more as I do it.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

You’re likely to be a little edgier than usual. So, do what’s necessary to keep yourself calm. Sign up for that extra yoga class. Commit to meditating before you traipse off to work. Breathe before you speak. There are also ways you can put this edge to positive use. Don’t believe your own BS, for example. You know the kind of lies you might tell yourself like, “I’m only going to lie down for a few minutes” when you know you it’s time to go to bed. Lead with what keeps you open, honest, and clear.

Affirmation:
I either curb my edginess or use it to cut through my own BS.
