“Rough and Smooth”

Great American Solar Eclipse, horoscopes, weekly horoscopes, 2017 horoscopes, Saturn direct, Nat Turner, Fannie Lou Hamer, civil rights, African Americans, justice, Leo, new moon

“I had a vision – and I saw white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle, and the sun was darkened—the thunder rolled in the Heavens, and blood flowed in streams – and I heard a voice saying, “Such is your luck, such are you called to see, and let it come rough or smooth, you must surely bear it.”

Mr. Nat Turner, freedom fighter, after his August 21, 1831 rebellion in Southampton, VA

“Is this America, the land of free and the home of the brave, where we have to sleep with our telephones off the hooks because our lives be threatened daily, because we want to live as decent beings, in America?”

Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, civil rights activist, August 22 at the 1964 Democratic National Convention.

Monday is the “Great American Eclipse.” It is the first solar eclipse visible across most of the United States for this millennium. There is another one scheduled to cross the sightlines of this one in 2024. It will then complete a big “X” over the country. Sounds ominous, right?

I don’t see it that way. But as I said in the intro to another set of horoscopes, eclipses were often seen as powerful messages.  This country is certainly receiving one.

Monday is also the 186th anniversary of Nat Turner’s rebellion. I talked about it recently on Twitter here and in this article in The Detroit Free Press/USA Today. I also noted that this is the 53rd anniversary of Fannie Lou Hamer’s monumental speech at the 1964 Democratic convention as this New York Times article reminded me. Just a day after Nat Turner’s rebellion.

Eclipses present us with moments of destiny. Right or wrong, Nat Turner embraced the solar eclipse on August 7, 1831 and strange astronomical phenomena afterward as a moment to embrace a destiny he saw. His vision called for blood and that included his own. The site for his rebellion is only an hour drive from Charlottesville, VA where we also saw bloodshed recently. But this time by a White imperialist.

Yet Mrs. Hamer presents us with a question instead, my favorite way for meeting moments of destiny. Of course, the question is very applicable now for many Americans. (And it’s beyond sad that’s still true 53 years later.) There’s also an individual imperative here. Questions allow you to find our own answers. But that also means you must be ready to own ALL of it, the good with the bad. That’s why serious Saturn moving direct on Friday bodes well for us to pick up any slack where we have shirked responsibility.

This Leo new moon that doubles as a solar eclipse is a wake-up call. For example, many in America mistakenly thought White imperialism was sleep or dead. It’s not. There’s a lot that’s been slumbering in our individual murky depths. But rough or smooth, bear the call of your heart now.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

The “Great American Eclipse” is still a new moon. And new moons are chance to renew a sense of who you are and what you can do. But also remember that new moons also bring darkness. This can stand for ignorance or unclear intentions. Yet, the darkest of this darkness comes when you believe that you know exactly and completely what you’re doing. When you don’t. And then you mask the truth with pride and lies. It’s actually good if you don’t have a clear read on how you move forward.  Stumble along. You’re not drunk with arrogance or a false sense of power. Your eyes are adjusting to darkness. Your honesty and willingness will break the light out from your mind and heart.

Affirmation:
My honesty and openness will oust any darkness in my life.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

You’re at your best when you know your center and return to that. For instance, if you’re a merchant, perhaps you only care about your customer’s satisfaction. Or if you’re a financial officer, you might only care about the bottom line. It’s only when you try to manage too much or please too many that you run the risk of becoming confused. Or worse, you spread yourself too thin. If you’re not feeling at your best, there’s a good chance you’re off-center. Step back, even if it means taking a “sick” day, to get back on track with yourself.

Affirmation:
I step back and center myself to move forward with clarity.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

People perhaps often forget why you’re so gracious. It’s not always political or because you want to please. It comes from an oft-deep belief that people are good. You want to believe others will be as good as you if in your shoes. It’s too dismissive to call that belief naïve, though. You’ve seen your fair share of good and bad in people. But don’t confuse protecting yourself as license to shut down from sharing your light most of the time. Like the Sun, you strive to shine on the good and bad. You want to be constant with others. Embrace more of that constancy, even with someone who hasn’t been as nice as you would’ve been. There’s a good chance that you’ll yield better results with your reliability.

Affirmation:
I stay constant and fair in the face of difficulty.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Sometimes we can put so much focus on what we want that we lose sight of how much we can do with what we have. You don’t need billions to end world hunger when you can save one person from starving today by buying him a sandwich. We must keep a sense of scale. That’s how real change has often happened in the world. And our lives. You have more in your possession now to make the BIG changes you want in your life. But perhaps it’s hard for you to see that. You will have to start with something you think is small. (It isn’t.)

Affirmation:
I possess what I need to make big changes in my life and the lives of others.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You might not have realized how much stale air you were breathing in until somehow you opened a metaphorical window in your life. Perhaps it came from a crisis. Or it came from a surprise windfall. But now you’re panting for more freshness, aliveness. There’s no point telling you to wait. There’s only so much waiting anyone can endure who knows he or she must be alive differently. Just know there is a thing as too much. You don’t have to jump out of a window for more air when you can carefully make an exit.

Affirmation:
I release myself from my own stodginess and plan for more open spaces in my life.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Going the extra mile with someone is the best choice now. Sometimes the real test of character is when you’re able to do the same when there’s no appreciable benefit. At least not soon. Others might wonder if you’re silly for risking so much for what appears to be too little. They’re not playing the long game you are. And there’s something else. A suitable sacrifice sends a message of gratitude to the Cosmos for all the sacrifices made for you. A refusal to do so shows just the opposite. Appreciate the give and take of life, and you’ll be justly given more.

Affirmation:
I show my thanks for what I’ve been given by giving a little extra to another.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

These are the moments when it’s clear that the person makes the circumstances, not the other way around. There are daunting circumstances that would normally stop another. But we can also shape what those circumstances can and should mean. Call it free will. Call it inspiration. Or call it “filling the unforgiving minute” as Rudyard Kipling describes it here. But no one should or can call you wholly owned by anything or anyone now. Don’t “suck up” anything just because someone says you must. No matter how many folks are telling you that. You can find a workaround.

Affirmation:
I embrace challenging circumstances as raw creative potential to be more of myself.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

There are micro- and macro changes at work, happening perhaps all at once. That might be emotionally overwhelming. It’ll be important to figure out the difference between beefing-up long-term goals and finessing short-term methods to fulfill them. In the business world, these are called “stretch” and SMART goals. The stretch goals are what push you to new limits. They’re still reasonable. But just unreasonable enough to feel the stretch, like doubling your work output. But you need specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound goals to guide how you will make those stretches. Here’s a site that details both.

Affirmation:
I dream bigger and smartly piece each dream together.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Remember why you’re first. You’re not definitively first in the Zodiac because you’ve necessarily earned the highest honors in this life or any supposed previous ones. You lead the Zodiac because your courage, discipline and curiosity compel you to get “out there.” You’re often willing to break new ground where others shrink away. Sometimes you might not even care if you’re first or only. (Though you might secretly hope others will eventually join you.) But you must move first. So, follow your heart where it wants to lead you.

Affirmation:
I follow my heart and others choose to follow that effortless leadership.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Anchoring yourself more at home or in comfort zones will help you cope better with challenges. Don’t push through too much. That doesn’t have to mean surrender. But working crazy hours to recover lost time or ground won’t necessarily translate into greater gains. In fact, just the opposite. You might lose track of more and feel even more tired and hangry. Move ahead, mindfully. Be aware what you’re doing as you do it. Be more like the laughing and full Buddha, and you’re likely to be more productive.

Affirmation:
I anchor myself in a good, comfy place to do more good things.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

You will likely want to devour more information, move faster, accomplish more, download people’s thoughts and upload more of your own into others. Yet, you’re not computer. You’re just a person who knows he or she’s on the brink of an upgrade. So, the Cosmos is delivering an upgrade. But, like a computer, it takes time to install all these new dimensions of yourself. And a few reboots. That doesn’t happen all in one week. You don’t have to push that hard to make it happen. Trust that it’s already begun.

Affirmation:
I am already able to do more I desire without pushing for it.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

Your way to more security can be measured by how you structure risk in your life. Keeping your money under a mattress is one surefire way to keep your money close to you and relatively safe. But if your stash is in a bank, it can earn interest and you can access your money in more places than just home. Yes, that’s a real extreme example. (Though there are some Cancers like this. Hi, Aunt Sis!) But spend some time thinking about how you can structure more risk in your life to earn and do a little more. It’s time.

Affirmation:
I structure more risk in my life to earn and do more.
