Summer’s Roar

This season’s first of two Leo new moons marks that the apex of the summer is on us. In the Sun’s only ruling sign, Leo, we’re more likely to feel the roar of its heat and perhaps some of the best of the fun that the season has to offer. As the Sun is the heart of our solar system, Leo stands for the human heart in the body. So, it’s fitting to ask what’s your heart roaring for now?

When the Sun teams up with muscle bound Mars on Wednesday, it’ll be doubly important to know what makes your heart boil, both good and bad. I’m focused more on the positive ways since that’s often what we neglect in the humdrum of getting by daily.

Where you find Leo in your birth chart is the arena of life where you’ll find the Sun trying to shine in some way. For instance, if you’re a Gemini rising, then Leo on the cusp of your third house is the arena of life where you seek to make connections with others, especially peers or siblings like you.

We can look at solar signs in a comparable way. So, below is a guide for ways to get in touch with your sign’s roar for the season and beyond. What’s trying to sound out from your heart?

With a cool evening-star Mercury slipping into level-headed Virgo on Tuesday, you might also have a better chance of figuring out ways to get that roar out.

And it’s okay if your roar sounds more like a mew at first. Perhaps you’ve not roared in a while from the depths of your heart. And be clear: you don’t have to bellow or yell to roar. A lion doesn’t struggle to roar. She or he has a natural eruption of feeling and being. It is more an emo thing than an ego one. If you’re roaring or showing off to bolster your ego, then that’s not from the heart, a Leo place. That’s from a lonely part of your mind.

Get outta there and come back to the furnace of your soul, where you forge the best part of yourself.

Read on for the SkyCodes for your particular moon, ascendant, Sun or key planet of your chart.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

Your roar comes from self-possession. It is to be your own person and to know who you are. It is also to make your presence known, even if you never make a peep. How exactly do you make your presence known in silence? Well, nearly any house cat can teach that lesson. A house cat can be enthralled with the delight of her own company before she ever bothers to notice you. Or you notice her. Yet, you can feel her in the room. Why? Because when something is truly alive and self-possessed, from the inside out, eventually someone will know. Be like that cat. Wait. You’re already like that cat.

Affirmation:
I seek to possess no other more than myself and the delight of that treasure is bountiful enough to share with others.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Your roar sears out a perception, maybe even a belief, that everything connects to something else. Yes, this feeds your eagle eye for detail. But it’s more than that. You’re moved to be of help because you feel you’d be responsible if some aspect of this great chain of being was broken by your neglect. That’s a lot to put on you. You also must remember that you’re part of this great chain. Your roar comes back to you from seeing, once again, that your caring attention makes the world a better place. And you are a better person by what you do for you.

Affirmation:
I improve the links between people, places or things as a link myself, not someone chained and bound by service.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

People get on your nerves. You even might hate some people for what they do. But the fiercest and fiery part of your heart burns for people to do better by each other. It’s with people that your notions and experiments that you discover the truth for what will make a better world. Even if you have a small group of friends, few would suspect how often you hatch experiments and conversations to make people get along better. Yet, you have to be willing to listen and feel what others are trying to teach you, too. They have other truths to share that might not make as much sense to you, at first. But you should be sure you’re listening. This is how Leo crowns you with wisdom.

Affirmation:
I listen to the wisdom of others as much as I share my wisdom for building better rapport.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Most often, you want the power to determine your being and future on your own terms. It’s hard to tell how much you can define for yourself without affecting others, though. That’s sometimes how you can sting. You wield the roar of your power to avoid being a puppet. But you could end up becoming a puppet master instead. Ultimately, the noblest way to honor real power is to cut everyone’s puppet strings. That’s when you rise to your truest destiny. But you’ll have to let go of the fear that someone else might lurk in the shadows with strings to lace you up.

Affirmation:
I love freedom enough to let others be free too.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Your heart burns and then roars for what lies beyond and what seems unknown to others. That’s why it’s so ironic that you speak with such certainty about people, places or things that seem familiar enough. Perhaps you even have some contempt for any or all that’s too common place. But the near and far don’t have to be mutually exclusive. You can inspire others to reach for the strange without belittling what’s common. Be grateful for the familiar. After all, it’s only a small “un” that makes the familiar not so. That suggests that there’s a shorter distance between the known and unknown than you might notice at first.

Affirmation:
I bridge the distance between familiar and unfamiliar with inspiration, not entitled contempt.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

What really roars behind the icky, common key phrase for you, “I use,” isn’t really the possible use of anything (or anyone). You fear and hate waste more. You hate to see potential wasted. You perhaps have a profound fear that you won’t be responsible enough for all your many talents and gifts to be the best you can be. There’s no sense chiding you for that fear because it’s a respectable fear. Yet, don’t fear that more than you love the challenge to make good on every gracious opportunity. See it like you’ve been given a second chance on life. We all have. That’s why my buddy, fitness trainer excelsior Gerren Liles says, “We all have two lives. The second life begins when you realize you only have one.” Yup, YOLO isn’t quite as cavalier as it sounds. But you also can’t be afraid to live it. Fully. Roar past the fear.

Affirmation:
I roar past the fear of waste to love any opportunity to be the best I can be.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Your roar comes from a deep belief in your fellow human being. You value your independence and expect others, whether stranger, foe or beloved, to respect his or her own self-rule. But that kind of thinking can easily lead to “stay in your lane and I’ll stay in mine.” The work to collaborate with another is a lot messier. You must believe in another enough to open yourself up to him or her. Interdependence is ultimately what your heart beats for. But your roars must work double-time. You roar to express your independence and to acknowledge the authority of another when she roars back.

Affirmation:
My free heart sings when it beats in time with the fierce heart of another.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Your roar resounds when the ordinary becomes sacred, the profane extraordinary. You relish contradictions more than you would like to admit because the dissonance lets light pierce through the tension. But you must admit this, even to yourself. Otherwise, you can deceive yourself (or others) into thinking that the sacred and the profane live in completely different worlds and ne’er the two shall meet. Except they do. In you. Every day. You roar from the place where routine borders on ritual and vice-versa. It’s not exactly what you do, but the feeling and devotion you put into doing it.

Affirmation:
My roar erupts in the fleeting moments when I am one with my dueling desires.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Your roar comes from feeling creative. That necessarily doesn’t mean you must or can paint, write, or dance your butt off. Yet, the way you are and who you are have a lot of originality to it. You are the artist and all the materials. Life and living are the canvas. The power to create that way gives you so much joy. But remember that others are doing a similar thing, though they might see their lives differently. At your best, you give ‘em a taste of how to see things your way. At your worst, though, you think the creative force is yours to own, not to share. Clearly, you want to be at your best more often.

Affirmation:
To create and be our creations is why we exist.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Your roar literally comes from the ground up. Perhaps that’s why I consider your sign the most radical sign of the Zodiac. The word radical comes from radix, the Latin word for “root.” In the 19th century, when you wanted to make a serious political change or reform, you were said to do it from the roots. Hence, radical. And that’s how you roll. You are THOROUGH. That’s both your strength and weakness. It’s strength since your heart gives you diligence and perseverance to go down as you come up. But be sure you have your priorities straight. Or you’ll root yourself in hostile soil and stubbornly yield too little growth.

Affirmation:
I ground myself in what nourishes prosperous growth for others and me.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Your roar is loud and clear when you’re in communion or communication with familiar folks. You’re a bit shyer with strangers. This usually surprises those who do know you. But you’ve learned that you must gauge how much you can let your mind, mouth, or hands rip with others. Not everyone can keep up with your shine. You even find hard to keep up with it. But you still must share that radiant shine. Don’t sullenly tuck too much of it away. So, stay stout of heart with those who can keep up and have mercy on yourself and others when they can’t.

Affirmation:
I wisely commune with those who appreciate all of the bands of my effusive light.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

Your roar comes from a sense of belonging. You know who and what belongs to you. Also, you know where you belong. You’re a fierce fighter for whoever or whatever you call your own. The challenge is that you might define that sense of belonging too narrowly. You’re also an individual. You may belong to many tribes because of your complex make-up and varied interests. It might be challenging to monitor so many dimensions of yourself. But you can’t ignore them either. Honor all that you own and what appears to own you by first taking care of your intricate self.

Affirmation:
I belong to many and owned by no one other than myself.
