“Mercury at May Day”

May Day, Mercury Direct, retrograde, first quarter moon, horoscopes, weekly horoscopes, 2017 horoscopes, Beltane, May Pole

I have a confession: I always think it’s a bit weird how celebratory people are when they hear Mercury goes direct, as he does on Wednesday. It’s weird because it’s rare to experience the relief of Mercury’s retrograde in such literal terms. Down to the very day he changes direction! I get having a bad set of turns during a retrograde. Live long enough while seeing planetary cycles and you’re bound to have a “bad” retrograde. But, as a working astrologer for over a decade, I can’t say that I’ve seen someone’s better fortunes turn on the day a planet goes retrograde or direct.

So, what is happening? Some of what’s happening is just hype, mainly on social media. That could be harmless. Many people relish the opportunity for collective thrashing or trashing. But it’s also possible to rush past the lessons of Mercury’s retrograde. Like forgetting to dress in layers, thinking a balmy morning can’t also bring a chillier afternoon or evening.

Instead, use this May Day to celebrate the lessons, if any, from this past Mercury retrograde. For instance, I slowed down on some of my “automatic” life responses. A year ago, I don’t think I would’ve taken a break like I did with last week’s horoscopes. But I allowed myself use the reverse motion of Mercury to alter how I do something really important to me. I was more spontaneous. (Those who know me well, know that I often think spontaneity is a four-lettered word.)  I tend to stay on a course, without a lot of afterthought when I set it. I also bought a few electronic devices during the retrograde, breaking with superstition tradition. I’m typing on that computer now with no problems.

I did have a problem with my upgrade to the iPhone 7, though. Yet, again, the “be aware” imperative of Mercury retrograde helped. I got a free upgrade (or Jump) through T-Mobile to an iPhone 7 from a 64 GB 6s+. But when I inspected everything at home carefully, I realized that I had lost 32GB of memory. So, I had to pay more to move up to a 128 GB iPhone 7 since Apple doesn’t make 64GB phones anymore. It was a perfect Mercury retrograde moment. Yet, it didn’t end all in disaster is the key point! It could’ve been. I used Mercury retro as a consideration. And, consideration, after all, is an astrological word! So, as the Roots say, have some cerebration before any celebration. Mercury is the perfect astrological symbol for that, as is the end of his retrograde.

Read on for the SkyCodes for your particular moon, ascendant, Sun or key planet of your chart.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Your storied stubbornness happens for a number of reasons. One simple reason is that you have a thing for control. Although some folks make that out to be a bad thing, it depends on what (or who) you try to control. Rule your roost. But be clear on what really is your roost. Your partner’s side of the closet probably isn’t really your roost, unless it’s all your closet. Use Mercury’s direct motion to think clearer about how and where to broaden your arenas of influence, like your home décor or your social network.

Affirmation:
I am clear on what roosts I rule and rule them well!

It might be easier to feel less like a recluse after Mercury moves direct on Wednesday. Some folks, of course, are not all. Remember that when key friends or other random folks work your last nerve. Yet, even as you feel more like your friendlier self, you shouldn’t rush headlong into being with a throng of people this weekend. There are curiosities and interests that would be best to explore alone. Or with hard-core loved ones who know you well and can keep up. That’ll keep needless friction down to a minimum while ramping up much needed pleasure.

Affirmation:
I choose wisely the times and people with whom I share my time and interests

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

A spiritual teacher of mine once said that rushing and impatience is what often leads to a multitude of “sins” and problems in someone’s life. This will likely be true for you if you push too fast to make something happen in your life, especially with your career. Flailing your arms and legs won’t stop you from failing. Or from having the fear of that happening. Keep your eye on your heart’s prize. But keep your hands and feet moving gently yet firmly toward a simple yet tangible goal. There’s no time to make up since all we ever truly have is one moment at a time.

Affirmation:
I gently and firmly move toward my heart’s prize, one piece of it at time

Stoke fires of adventure in your mind.  Stroll down memory lane of your epic journeys to glean what you found most enjoyable and what didn’t work as well. Then think more about where else you might want to go. It doesn’t matter if you won’t be able to go any time soon or not. Working your “adventure” muscles primes you to think big and get some perspective on your daily life and routines. Imagine you’re tasting the food you’ll relish during your next adventure. It’ll energize you to set the stage for simpler discoveries. Like finding a new restaurant specializing in the cuisine where you’ll land up next

Affirmation:
I am setting the stage every day for bigger adventures.

The best instruction manuals are the ones written by someone who has put something together bit by bit. You would think that would be true for all manuals. But that’s not often the case. Think about that as you evaluate doing something in theory that you’ve yet put into practice. Don’t rigidly stick to what something or someone tells you should be done. Make sure it lines up with your good sense or experience. Experience is still the best of all teachers. Don’t discount what you know in your soul for what’s spoken by another who might not know diddly.

Affirmation:
I strive to match what I know in my soul with what others think or have experienced as true.

Turn the volume of your life down. One of the greatest innovations in social media has been the mute button. Perhaps there’s always someone on your timeline who’s always screaming or whining about something. Maybe as you turn down the volume, you’ll see you do that some too. That doesn’t matter. What matters though is regaining more the power to listen better without a lot of noise. This Mercury retrograde likely turned up the noise in your life. Now that he’s moving direct, it’s time to re-discover quieter and more moderate voices in your life. Starting, of course, with your own.

Affirmation:
I turn down the noise in my life to hear better my own voice and wisdom.

Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

When I was a teen, I stumbled on a book, Ninja Mind Control, at a bookstore. I had to have it. I thought, “Finally, I’ll learn the skills to control other people’s minds.” Boy, was I wrong. The whole book was about learning to control your own mind using putative skills learned by ninjas. Yet, I learned a valuable lesson that’s possibly important for you too. The first lesson of power over others is to be sure you have self-control. This often starts with the “little” things. Like how regular are you with most things in your life? When you’re not regular, what or who do you tend to blame first? Once you’re clear on that, what’s one decision you can make that makes you feel more in control of something that’s irregular in your life?

Affirmation:
I take small steps toward controlling what I can make more regular and constant in my life.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Perhaps you’ve not felt like this “shoot from the hip” creature that astrologers frequently describe as your sign. It might be hard to feel that way with tight-ass Saturn riding through your sign like a maniac with a whip. Yet, the truth is that you should remember to be more spontaneous even as you try to stick to a plan. These two modes of living don’t have to be at odds. Keep plotting out milestones. But make allowance for your own creativity for how you get there. That’s the miraculous message of your sign. You aim far. But you only shoot forward one arrow at a time with increasing accuracy. Stay patient…and persistent.

Affirmation:
I tap into my quiver of creativity to steady my aim for long-range targets.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

You will likely feel overwhelmed by how others attempt to reach out to you. Perhaps folks you’ve not heard from in a while are writing you with demands or requests as if they just spoke with you yesterday. You also can’t seem to catch enough time to soak in your own thoughts. Turn down (or off) some of the notifications on your phone or tablet. Unplug and unwind. Often. You don’t have to go fully off the grid. But you also don’t need to be too much on any person’s radar. Appreciate the beauty and power of silence and stillness more. It’s what makes buzz and lively conversation even better.

Affirmation:
I successfully find pockets of silence and stillness to plug into myself and what juices me up.

Confidence is not cockiness. They can often look the same, though. But there’s a straightforward way to tell the difference. Internally, true confidence always springs from a sense of abundance. The fount could be a richness of experience or faith. Cockiness doesn’t have that wealth…and often looks that tawdry. That’s why the cocky regularly must fill in vast blanks with attention to themselves and what they say they can do. Be sure you’re hooked into your own true abundance, even if you don’t feel you have as much as another. You once knew fewer words, too. But that probably didn’t stop you from using and relishing the words you knew. Start with what you have. The confidence you need will spring from that.

Affirmation:
I tap into the source of true confidence in my life with patience and gratitude.

Productivity, according to many experts, isn’t so much about doing a lot of things well. It’s getting the most important things done first. You’ll have an easier time figuring that out if you decide on what’s most important for you to enjoy and do at the start of the week. Stay flexible since Mercury moving direct will require you to change up how you plan to get things done. But watch out for the “busy trap.” If you find yourself so busy that you’ve lost sight of any pleasure, chances are you’ve also lost sight of your priorities.

Affirmation:
I create lively ways to make productivity pleasurable.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Yes, bring the fire. But think of yourself more like a grill with coals burning steadily but not red hot. Pull your punches, for example. But you don’t have to retreat. As Mercury recovers lost ground, you’re also getting more of your bearings. In recent weeks, it’s been important to figure out who’s friend or foe. You likely have a better sense of that. But now you might match the impulse to “make things happen” with finesse, charm, and restraint. None of this must smack of as much “fakeness” as you think. You just don’t have to forge connections and get things going with great suffering. You can give a cool, scented word at unexpected times to loved ones & colleagues even as you inspire them to turn the heat up on things.

Affirmation:
I entice and excite the willing toward excellence.
