Pretty hurts

horoscopes, weekly horoscopes, 2017 horoscopes, beyonce, pretty hurts, new moon, Scorpio, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, square, conjunction

Three years ago, Beyoncé came out with “Pretty hurts.” The song moved me because, as a straight man, there’s not been much in my life with pop culture that highlights the cost of propping up the male gaze on what and who’s beautiful, especially its effects on women. Men are often trained that it is our God-given right to appreciate any woman as beautiful, regardless of how she feels about her own beauty, our gaze, or whether she wants to be appreciated for her beauty. More patriarchal lunacy.

As stunning Venus conjoins with dazzling, grand Jupiter brightly in Monday’s morning sky, I can’t help but think about how the combo signifies what’s beautiful in our lives. When these two planets get together, as they do every year, there’s bound to be a desire to live the good life. (They’re just not necessarily visible in the early morning sky.) But as I mentioned last week, Venus is in the sign of her detriment. It’s an appropriate time to think about the cost of that good life.

Along that same train of thought, worldly Mercury squares off unworldly Neptune Monday afternoon. These two planets often count toward us being more in our own fantasies. We want the glamour of the Matrix. We want the pretty, not the hurt. That’s great when we have the luxury of staying in our own heads and can use that to write or daydream. But things can get weird when we must connect with others. You must be sure you’re not casting someone in a private movie that’s only in your head and for which he or she’s never auditioned. Ground that glamour with simplicity and straight-forwardness.

A Scorpio new moon caps the week on Saturday. We astrologers say that the moon in Scorpio is in its fall, another designation, like detriment, to suggest that the planet doesn’t do well there. It’s also a “dark” moon since it’s a new moon. That doesn’t have to be depressing, though. Perhaps the lyrics of Beyoncé’s pretty song can instruct us here:

“Pretty hurts
Shine the light on whatever’s worse
Perfection is the disease of a nation
Pretty hurts
Shine the light on whatever’s worse
Tryna fix something
But you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery”

True to the perceptive and surgical skills of Mars’ rulership of Scorpio, we can spot what to fix from the level of the soul, not what we gaze on with our eyes.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

It’s very likely that sometime during your Scorpio-influenced life that you’ve been dubbed witchy or warlock-like. Perhaps, at one point, you even took offense. Maybe you didn’t like the idea that you stood out in some way. Or that you were said to possess some dark magic. But now you might know that you just have magic. The darkness is what others, or you, attached to it. It was your own fear of that magic that follows you sometimes. Let more of that magic happen. Don’t fear it. Don’t try to unveil it rationally. Let it breathe through and in you. Your week will be happier and more rewarding for it

Affirmation:
I embrace the magic that seeks to live through and in me.

Gift giving was among the many wise things Jesus spoke on. “But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right is doing. So that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” You don’t have to believe in a Divine Father (or Mother) to recognize that giving discreetly is just as important as giving wisely. Your best gifts come from attention to the receiver, not the gift or the giving. Bemoaning or applauding how much you’re doing for someone or something might suggest your heart isn’t fully open. Or that you’re not giving wisely. When you give from the heart, your heart will speak louder and better than anything your mouth can or should speak.

Affirmation:
My charitable heart is more eloquent than anything my mouth could say.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Indeed, the truth can set people free. But there’s a darker truth, too. That only works for those who want to be free…and not everyone wants to be free. Keep that in mind as you advise a friend. Or coach a colleague through a difficult decision. You might see what he or she needs to do to get out of a mess. But some people LIKE to define themselves by their snares and troubles. They might not know how to recognize themselves without them. So, don’t be frustrated by someone’s meandering path to freedom. It’s not about you. Or the truth. Or even perhaps how you delivered it. It’s also about how someone wants to soar badly enough on his or her own.

Affirmation:
I can deliver the truth that sets someone free, but I can’t be the freedom.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Sometimes saying the right thing isn’t always about having the best or right words. It’s having the best of intentions and giving your all, as best as you can. A hand gesture might be all someone needs to feel better or gain a fresh perspective. So, don’t fret too much about what to say, how to say it, where to do it, and so on. Your job is to be as present as you can for someone. The rest will happen magically. You don’t have to believe in magic for it to appear. You only need trust that your willingness to help a soul in need kindles magic’s wonders and charms.

Affirmation:
I trust my kindness and best intentions kindles magic.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Sometimes when life throws you a curve ball, you just need to step out of the way. Don’t be too fast to react to someone or something that catches you off-guard. Like, a colleague really making THAT kind of joke in THESE kinds of times at a staff meeting. Perhaps your first impulse might be to keep up appearances. But you’ll need time or a space where you can sit with the unadorned truth. Claim that, even if it means taking a bathroom break in the moment. The truth will usually ring in harmony with what your body feels is also true. Once you know the truth, however it appears, then run with it. Don’t worry about being nice. You don’t have to fear being unkind. You don’t have to be unkind to not be nice. Your one job is to speak the truth plainly. Any other flavor, sweet or sour, someone else savors, ain’t your fault.

Affirmation:
Once I claim the space and time to find my truth, I deliver it as is for other to flavor, savor, or discard as they wish.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

The funny thing about being paranoid is not that you’re completely wrong. It’s that you’re usually right about a very specific thing and often wrong about everything else. It might not be true that someone is watching you through your mirror, for example. But that doesn’t mean someone isn’t watching you somewhere else. The wisdom is to be aware of the right things. Your intuition might be rightly telling you that something is off about someone or a situation. Just don’t jump to any final conclusions about what that might be. Keep alert until you can pin down what’s off. You will if you don’t try to pin down too much too fast.

Affirmation:
I trust I will sleuth out what’s off with a situation or person.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

True generosity is to give with discretion, not with judgment. That’s what my dearly departed Imam once said to me. If you’re judging someone as you give to him or her, then you’re not giving from the heart. For instance, perhaps you’re (again!) giving money to your “bum” of a brother because you don’t want to look like a bad sibling. That means you’re giving more to your own reputation than to your actual brother. Let loose the strings with how you give, if you decide to give. That will free you to have and do more.

Affirmation:
I give as a giver, not a judge.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

It’s one thing to add beauty more into your daily routines and workspaces as I encouraged last week. But keep in mind the true reason for this is to take up your overall pleasure meter a notch. It always amazes me how people think they can have better lives at some point in the distant future while fixated on their misery in the present. You must create more moments of pleasure now. Remember your now was once a future to you in the past. You build the wonders of your future with each pleasurably well-made moment of your present.

Affirmation:
I build the wonders of my future with each pleasurably, well-made moment of my present.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

You’re still fiercely protective of your pleasure zones and spaces. You don’t want anyone to disturb your groove. Except you’re likely disturbing your own groove and delaying your own pleasures with a certain inattentiveness. Recently, for example, I discovered I had set up a device wrong because I didn’t really read the instructions. I had been using it, in my mind, just fine. But I wasn’t using it optimally. (Yes, I know I sound like a typical guy. #Sigh.) You might be in a similar boat now. Look carefully at what you’re doing, especially with work or working out, and check to see if you’re doing it right or best.

Affirmation:
I optimize what I do to have more time to enjoy doing nothing.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

You’re lulled into seeking quieter and more comfortable spaces now. Perhaps even bordering on complete lazy self-indulgence. Embrace as much of it as you can. It’s okay if you don’t feel the same excitement for home improvement projects now. Or if you don’t feel the rush to return your brother’s check-in call or invite out for a meal. You’ll get your swerve back once you get more rest, even sleep. Consider yourself undergoing a minor hibernation period. For you, whether it’s cold or blazing hot where you are, winter has come. Be the bear and enjoy your much-earned honey.

Affirmation:
I embrace my laziness as a chance to catch up with myself…and sleep.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Take a page from John Mayer’s hit, “Say what you need to say,” especially with close friends and family. And that’s not only all the nice stuff you’ve wanted to say. This includes some of the hard things you’ve NOT wanted to say. You’re right to fear coming off too judgmental. But the difference between a disapproving, unsolicited opinion and a perhaps better received one starts with asking a person if she cares to hear what you have to say. Then say it as simply and clearly as you can. You’re bound to feel lighter for speaking your piece to have peace.

Affirmation:
I say clearly and simply what needs to be said if someone is willing to hear it.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Part of being an adult is learning to be practical and reasonable. Yet, you can’t be too much of that. That’s one reason why you were a kid! You must keep some of the magical and imaginative daring of your youth. Otherwise, practicality becomes a clever way to hide fear and mediocrity. Start being imaginative and creative in small ways. Re-write your resume as if you were writing hot advertising copy for a great new product. The point isn’t for anyone else to see it. It’s for you to get a fresh perspective on some of the mundane things you do and have done. This can lead to real world changes, though. Playfulness matched with practicality will keep you young and vibrant enough to reach new heights

Affirmation:
I match playfulness with practicality to stay on point toward my goals.
