SkyScript Horoscopes for the week of October 23-29, 2017 1

Horoscopes to unlock the stars, not to be locked down by them.

Oh Lucky Day!

weekly horoscopes, horoscopes, 2017 horoscopes, Sun, Jupiter, Sun-Jupiter conjunction, luck, lucky day, Seneca, stoicism, stoic philosophy, stoic week, popular astrologer

For a simple word, luck is a way more difficult concept. I hear the word often because there’s the expectation that astrology and other “occult” arts can help you improve your luck. Heck, it took years for people to stop asking me how they could use astrology to play their “lucky” lottery numbers. And even we astrologers don’t do enough to dispel those kinds of ideas. A very popular astrologer has said that this Thursday is destined to be the luckiest day of the year. I’m not so sure about that. She says this because the regal Sun joins by conjunction with “lucky” Jupiter on that day.

First, I’ll have to say that my biggest problem with that astrologer’s call is how some might define luck. Most think luck is just goodness “out there” waiting to happen to you. I subscribe to the paraphrased definition of luck originally given by the stoic thinker Seneca: Luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If the preparation matches the opportunity, you’re more likely to experience the better fortune of the moment.

Preparation doesn’t just have to be physical readiness. You also have to be mentally ready with optimism, gratitude, goodwill, and open-mindedness. Better fortunes can’t pave a better path ahead of you if your heart is closed. You have to be hospitable to Jupiter’s grandeur and greatness or face the wrath of his your consequent excesses.

Those excesses are the dark side of Jupiter events that we astrologers often fail to mention. In our pursuit for good “luck”, we can overdo it. We can drink too much. Spend too much on trying to have a lucky day. Or just expect too much for no reason whatsoever. But luck doesn’t need to be eventful. And I know some of you don’t want to hear that shit. I get it. (I didn’t say there couldn’t be an event. Only that a grand event shouldn’t be your focus.)

Instead, think more how you can broaden your focus and energy for the things you can control. Lay the groundwork for a big trip. Yes, make the down payment on that house you’re ready to buy. Donate to charity. Create your luck. Be expectant of the good in your life. Reflect on how you can create more good in your world and for others. Better understand the excesses of your character. Perhaps it’s better curb how much coffee you’re drinking. Or how much you are spending on lottery tickets to become “lucky.”

So, as I said, luck is difficult. You can indeed reap better fortunes that seem to be “out there.” But you also must be mentally and emotionally prepared to seize them. That’s work you must remember on a continuous basis. Thursday’s lovely conjunction between Jupiter and the sun is only a blessed reminder.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

“Go big or go home” might resound loudly in inner ear. In fact, you might feel antsy enough like there’s a continuous ringing in your ears. You can think of that as the sound assertive Mars makes when he’s in peaceable Libra, his new digs since last Sunday. So, you’re ready to start something mighty. But you can just end up in a big, unnecessary fight if you don’t use foresight. Or you don’t choose a project worthy of giving more of your all. You’ll know you’re avoiding a worthwhile task if you’re fussing over stupid isht. And you can be certain it’s stupid if you do a gut check and the whole thing seems pointless. And you don’t care about any of it, really. You only want to blow off some steam. Good. Do that with something that changes your life…or the world.

Affirmation:
I am ready to tackle a task worthy of my best and all.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

I used to love a gospel song titled “God has smiled on me” when I was a child. Once, while playing the song on the piano, the sun sprayed through a cloudy day into my window onto the keys. I took it as God smiling on my playing. Those moments when you feel in sync with the goodness of life might not be provable in a lab. But they sure feel good. And, what’s more, those moments encourage you to embrace goodness to give back the same. You, of course, could use them to think that you are God’s gift to humankind. (And you are.) But you’re not God’s only gift. If you can remember that, you’re bound to come out the solitary shell of your own ego and be someone’s bright sun bursting through on a cloudy day.

Affirmation:
I am one blessing for others in a string of blessings in my life and theirs.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Controlled bouts of chaos can be successful ways to keep a greater chaos at bay. Screaming into a pillow for 30 seconds can prevent you from loudly cussing out a stranger later who accidentally scuffed your newly shined shoes en route to an interview. Or less traumatic, you can leave your desk a mess to give yourself five more minutes to enjoy a relaxing hot shower. In other words, think about when you can cast caution and control aside in constructive ways to avoid destruction. Keeping it all together is probably a way to ensure that many things can fall apart faster. You are entitled to your pleasure. You’re allowed to feel overcome with emotion. But that doesn’t mean you have to let your feelings overcome you. Don’t treat such feelings with repression. Find a safer container of expression for them.

Affirmation:
I create ways to express chaos in my life without losing full control.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

My Aquarian dad always said, “You can’t bullshit a bullshitter.” It took me years not to be disgusted by images of bulls taking a dump. Or the unfortunate idea of endless cycles of folks trying to trick each other—once I got what he was saying. But the maxim is deeper than manure or deception. It’s encouragement to speak the truth, especially now at work or with your own career goals. If Freud grew up in the hood, perhaps he’d call the impulse to water down the truth a BS instinct. Well, rise above the BS instinct. That’s not a license to be crude or rude. But you can look honestly at whether something is true. Are you truly owed a promotion for your work? And if you are and haven’t gotten it, were you more hoping you’d get the promotion to avoid admitting you’ve outgrown the place anyway?

Affirmation:
Especially at work, I clearly and cleanly serve the truth to others and myself.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Epistemology is the formal study of knowledge. But what’s funny is that leading works in the field question more than answer with certainty. You too might often answer you don’t know how you know what you know. And that’s a good start. You’re bound to test the boundaries of knowledge this week. You’ll teeter on the line between knowing something as true and hoping something to be true. Relying solely on hope can lead you to lean too hard on fragile luck. When understanding teams with skill, though, hope matures into sturdy faith. Seek to understand what you know. That doesn’t have to become doubt or knowledge chasing its own tail. You can know some distant shore beckons you and not know why it does. Yet, study more about that place before booking your ticket and just landing up there. You can feel your way into a subject or thing from the inside out.

Affirmation:
I build my faith in what I just know somehow with understanding and exploration.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

You may see with fresh eyes where and how you’ve been wasting time, energy, or money with someone or something. You might have strong feelings after discovering this. But you don’t have to make a show about cutting someone off or something out. Like how people used to announce they were unfollowing or unfriending someone on social media. It always took up more attention than necessary. (Of course, people still do this. But let’s imagine it’s happening less, as it should, okay?) Create options for scaling down or out. Yet, there’s no turning back once you spot wasted resources. Change is necessary. You need to put more of your time, energy, or money elsewhere. For bigger and productive things.

Affirmation:
I wisely change out waste to cycle in bigger and productive people and things.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

You find that thoughts about a significant other or partners crowd your mind more, even if you’re single or work solo. But you can unintentionally shrink yourself when you’re single and this happens. You start thinking about all that you’re not. Judging yourself too harshly. Or allowing others to judge you. Like, how come you ain’t married yet? Mute that noise. Think about all you’re really prepared to give. Concentrate on whether you’re giving your best gifts. For instance, is there enough space and time in your life for a partner? Is that what you want? Many coupled folks run their relationships on automatic, giving more careful attention to their work life, for example. Then I’m always surprised when they’re surprised that their relationship falls apart. Similarly, how could a lot of single folks know what they can give to a partner with a social calendar crowded with friends and social activities?

Affirmation:
I clearly know how to share my best gifts with others.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

Nearly every productivity guru of the last 20 years warns of the hazard of a “to-do” list. They can be dangerous because they give the comfort of “getting things done” without ever prompting you to think whether you’re getting the RIGHT things done. Or in the right order. Start with seeing and feeling the end in mind for the day or week before you geek over the means to do them. For example, if you want to feel more relaxed at the end of your day, center your day on creating that rather than dive into all the things you must do. Planning that way could prompt more creativity AND help you get more done.

Affirmation:
I achieve the feelings I desire daily through wisely managing the tasks I must do.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

This might be the height of the downtime I’ve been talking with you about for weeks. This can manifest in two ways, at least, that come from the same place. One way: you’re lazy AF. You wish you had butlers and maids to do everything for you. And if luckily you have employees like that already, you wish you had more. There’s no sense scolding you, because you already know you’re being ridiculous. But you’ll also know when you’re sick and tired of feeling sluggish. Then your on-the-go mojo will be back. Another way: the downtime inspires you to do everything you normally don’t have time to do. You end up running around and tired AF. Both manifestations reflect an ego that doesn’t know its limits. The better position is to enjoy feeling good and to do good as best you can. That’s good enough.

Affirmation:
I enjoy feeling good and do good as best I can.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

Think light touches…with just about everything. You have a lot of emotional force ripping through you, especially toward the weekend. You’ll tend to add “relish” to most things you do. But others might read more into what you express than you intend. You, for example, sharply ask a question, and it looks like you’re roaring. You speak with conviction on a topic, and others picture you on a soapbox. That doesn’t mean you have to be as quiet as a church mouse. Or gag yourself. (As if!) Just be mindful that you don’t have to add any extra feeling or nuance to convey what’s on your mind.

Affirmation:
I express precisely what’s on my mind—nothing else needed since my thoughts are flavorful enough.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

You’re often a master of precision. But sometimes a need for precision can prompt overkill. I’ve come to believe there’s an art to giving directions, for example. Most folks err on the side of giving too little info. (“Um, you forgot to mention that which way we had to turn at the rotary on the way to your house.”) But you might err on the side of giving too much, for example. Of course, we’re not limiting this possibility only to directions. The key is trusting that you can discern what’s most important to communicate in the moment. No, not everything is important. You don’t have to cover everything or think of every possible contingency.

Affirmation:
I trust myself to be an effective communicator.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

As you’re expectant for more, of nearly everything in your life, be sure you’ve expressed gratitude for what you already have. I’m always amazed by how so many folks skip this necessary step toward more abundance. Your gratitude is a statement of your faith in the goodness of life. Another important benefit of appreciating what you have is you can see what you’ve outgrown. You likely have too much of something that you can now shed. For example, maybe you have too many clothes gathering dust (or worse) in your closet. Might be a good time to purge before you can craft a fresh look with new clothes for the season or longer.

Affirmation:
I reset my capacity for more abundance by appreciating what I have and letting go what no longer suits me.
