Balancing Act

Balancing act, new moon, cusps, Libra, Mercury, Scorpio, Mars, Libra, Eddie Murphy, The Golden Child, pure as the water, balance

Thursday’s new moon happens in the last four degrees of Libra, nearing the end of the first third of autumn. Fleet-footed Mercury would have already entered Scorpio on Tuesday. Mars closes out the week by tipping into Libra on Sunday. In other words, we find find the Sun, Mercury and Mars at the “cusp” of other signs. We are on the cusp of change, in the middle of a true balancing act. When I once talked about cusps, I made it clear that they don’t technically exist in astrology. But perhaps it’s better to say that cusps don’t exist as most people think they do. Yet, there is something that happens with what’s called a cusp.

Most people imagine the cusp like international waters. Like a zone where there’s a blending or meeting between two states. The cool thing about astrology and computers is that we can now calculate down to the second where a planet is by sign. A planet can’t be in two places (or signs) at once. Someone born this week isn’t both Libra and Scorpio, at least not by Sun sign. (That’s even taking into account what Gary Goldschneider’s interesting work says about cusps.)

I tend to think this balancing act is more like a scene from one of my favorite movies, “The Golden Child” featuring Eddie Murphy. In the scene, Chandler Jarrell (Eddie Murphy) must cross a bottomless crater, jumping on long flat-headed poles, to retrieve a sacred knife without spilling a drop of water from a glass he must carry. He’s told that he must keep his thoughts as pure as the water he carries. But he’s not told why. You’ll see why in the clip I’ve shared.

Eddie Murphy from “The Golden Child”

The cusp is more a test of character—how well you’re prepared to achieve another state, another sign. Often that test, though, requires that we test our character in some way that gets us out of our heads, away from our own excuses. For example, the test given to Eddie Murphy’s character could’ve been only to keep his thoughts pure as he bounded over a chasm toward his goal. Instead he had to watch something external to his thoughts and connect the two at the right point.

This is the magic of the cusp. It’s the point when you can best understand how what once seemed like a burden or unnecessary becomes essential for your quest. It’s also when there’s a powerful exchange between what’s internal with what’s external. Or vice-versa. It’s not an either/or. It’s the ascendancy of an and/both. Your thoughts become somehow purified in the way they need to be. You are pushed to have more regard for something that once seemed trivial or a complete mystery. You cross one end of not knowing into another way to know and be known.

For this week, at the “cusp” of Libra into Scorpio, I’m reminded of this song by Annie Lennox that’s recently blasted back into my consciousness from 30 years ago. (Be sure to look up the lyrics because the images in the video can be distracting. It was the 80s, okay?) We move beyond the eloquence of language and proper ratios. And feel the more passionate and irregular shapes of our hearts, hearing much more than what we could say or hear.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

Perhaps you feel like a kind of Christmas has come and gone and you can’t find where the presents are hidden. This new moon and last week of your solar birthday season might leave you feeling shafted. You might have had a whole bunch of expectations and they’ve left you as satisfied as devouring a whole bunch of cotton candy at a county fair with hayrides as the main attraction. But maybe you had big wishes and hadn’t prepped any figurative soil with sturdy seeds. Reminds me of something I read recently from peak performance guru Tim Ferris: “Life punishes the vague wish and rewards the specific ask.” So, sometimes we have empty harvests because we haven’t been specific enough. Or have confused a wish or a sulky demand for an ask. You have a chance to “do-over” with this new moon, though. Chances are you’ll be considerate enough to ask. But be sure you get real specific rather than try to entertain all the options you can.

Affirmation:
I set my expectations for more with clarity, specificity and the confidence to ask them met.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

You’re bound to have a lot more on your mind and plate than usual. Perhaps you even end up sharing from your full mind, too. Opening up is usually a good thing for you. But it’s perhaps better to stay mindful of how much you open up. Or, at least, for how long. Time is a limited, elusive thing. You only have so much of it in an hour, a day or a year. You’ll have to stay clear on your priorities. But not too much. It’s best to think about getting important things done first and then stay open for times when you can more leisurely chat or while the day away. It’ll be also good to keep a record of things you must do or things you’d like to say. You won’t have to make up for lost time by re-tracing steps or re-inventing ideas.

Affirmation:
I itemize and prioritize what must be done to create more time for fun.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

You might often feel claustrophobic. But I imagine you don’t often feel that in your own head. Like you’re going through your own bout of cabin fever in a winter of the soul rather than by season. This might prompt you to do, well, dumb shit. You don’t like to do that. So, the smarter thing might be to find something that lets off the pressure without blowing off the lid of everything in your life. For starters, write in a journal until your hands are weak or tired. Or get someone’s permission (please) to talk their ear off. But the cost will likely be hearing what he or she has to say about what you said. Pay that price. You don’t have to heed all or any of it. One last suggestion would be meditation, if you already do it. If not, that’s maybe a big ask. Your thoughts are running like wild stallions in a space no bigger than your own head. Probably hard to tame them all at once that way. But you will have to find some space for those stallions to roam.

Affirmation:
I discover positive and creative ways to express my many thoughts.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

This new moon perhaps feels weird. It’s as if much is within your grasp. But there’s nothing in your hands. And you might know this is where many folks mess up somehow. In fact, this might be how you’ve messed up recently. What happens is that folks either get too grubby, pushing with too much impatience toward the goal. Or they go into cruise control and end up speeding past the mark. How do you hit the right stride to get what you want when you can just smell it? There’s no one answer to this. But one thing to consider, as a perfect thing to do toward the end of Libra season, is trust that you’ve chosen the right mark to hit. But realize you can only control doing the best you can with what you got. Impatience usually comes from wanting more control than you have. And cruising past your mark comes from assuming you have more control than you have. Realize instead that you’re going to be okay regardless of what happens. But you prefer the best to happen by giving your best. That way you have a better chance of reaping new moon seeds of purpose you can sow soon.

Affirmation:
I trust giving my best, no more or less, to score a goal I desire.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

If you’re of the mind that knowledge is power, then perhaps you should see this. No doubt knowledge is a crucial step toward getting power. But getting and having are two different things. It’s more important to know where you truly stand in the big scheme of things. More often, folks overestimate what power they wield. Yet they underestimate what they can do in their lives given the right mind and time frames. That’s where you can use the power of this Libra new moon to make adjustments. Perhaps your time frame is just off. You might be able to do something for yourself in weeks rather than thinking it’ll take years for you to do it. Usually it’s just a matter of beginning, not knowing vaguely or in theory that you can do something. Then you learn what you really can do. And can’t. So, start with looking closely at what’s been on your mind to do for a while. Then focus more on a time frame that seems realistic to do it. Chances are you can do it faster than you think.

Affirmation:
I set the right frames of mind and time to get what’s within my control to change.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

This might be one of those times when you don’t know your own strength, like Whitney sang about in this song. This doesn’t mean that you should necessarily expect to go through tough times now. If that’s what’s happening, then you should know that you can and will get through it. Regardless, whether good, bad or so-so times, you’re called to appreciate the wisdom of your resilience. This shouldn’t be a call for cockiness, though. Just the opposite. It’s seeing that your strength comes from your faith, in life, yourself, the Divine or your sense of destiny. In whatever is greater than you and also doesn’t want to crush you. That’s why you can see more of the big picture for your life. Faith does, indeed, open doors. But only if you take the time to know what you have faith in.

Affirmation:
My faith in what’s greater than I am is what keeps me strong.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

This new moon charges you to look deeper into what nurtures your close relationships. With some folks, you might find that you have zero connection. You’re not one for pretenses. So, it might be time to stop pretending like something is going on or going anywhere with these people. Others, though, will inspire you to spend more time together, getting to know each other better. This definitely has more romantic overtones since it is cuffing season now. But the coziness is more important than that and not just limited to boo-making realms. This is where you can also build a stronger relationship to your customer’s needs. Or develop a better read on how you can better support a business partner.

Affirmation:
I cultivate the connections that pull me in deeper for more I value.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

You’re bound to learn a little more about freedom now as Jupiter journeys through your opposite sign, Scorpio. As I said last week, this means the freedom you allow for yourself and others. Yet, according to one of my teachers, Dr. Sultan Abdulhameed, “A measure of freedom is whether you are able to keep the promises you make to yourself.” The power to keep those promises, though, comes to us moment by moment. In the words we choose. With the actions we take. Most often that means having a clear sense of the steps you must take to make something happen. Or having the end in mind and working backwards to know how to get there. So, for example, if you commit to getting up early, then you need a plan to go to bed early enough to get enough sleep.

Affirmation:
I keep my freedom by planning to keep the promises I make to myself and others.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

You probably can feel more that important shifts are happening than have clear cut evidence that’s true. So, of course, you likely don’t trust any of it. You might be inclined to obsess about collecting proof that you’re making progress. But that would be a waste. You’ll be missing out on how your confidence is budding again. How creative you’re beginning to feel. How your faith in others is restoring. Instead, you’d uproot up a budding crop to see if it’s growing. And if you aren’t feeling like you’re gaining more of your swag, then look closer at the obstacle that appears to block your path. You’ll likely see that the obstacle has gotten weaker or you have gotten stronger. Or both. But there’s more change afoot than you’re recognizing.

Affirmation:
I have faith in the positive changes rumbling in my life, even when I can’t see them.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

You, perhaps more than any other sign of the Zodiac, have a firm sense of what “home” can and should mean. It’s more than just a safe space for you. It’s what grounds you to be able to reach out farther and better into the world. This new moon signals how you have a pass to give home even more attention than usual. You, of course, can spend more time cleaning it. Or fixing things up around the house. Or you can just invite over family or friends and veg out over card games and streaming your favorite shows. But the point is to be more in the place (and with the people) who make you feel like the world is “out there.” Claim the down time. It’ll make it easier to swoop into the “up-n-at-em” time later.

Affirmation:
I welcome the opportunity to keep the world “out there” with the things and folks who make me feel at home.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

There’s more energy circulating in your mind than you might know how to manage. But manage it you must. First, you can channel this energy into sharpening ideas and work that have been in development for months, especially any since August. Share what’s going on in that fertile mind of yours to get feedback. Yes, talk! But be sure to talk about the right things. As Mars dips into Libra on Sunday, there’s a chance that you’ll want to add a little more edginess to how you speak to folks. Great when you have a point to make. Bad when you don’t and you just waste time arguing or “debating” with someone about something. Trust that you’ve done your best to deliver your thoughts. But don’t spend too much time trying to convince anyone to listen. Build with the folks who feel you. Move on from the ones who don’t.

Affirmation:
I use my strong flow of creative mental energy to build, by myself or with those who want to build with me.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

I recently watched someone begging for money throw back a nickel to the person who had just given it to him. The man picked up his nickel, walked back, and asked the begging man why he threw his nickel back at him. The beggar said that getting a nickel was an insult. The donor pocketed his nickel and said, “Well, that was my last nickel. That’s why you’re out here begging. You’re an ingrate.” Then walked off. It was an interesting exchange. I’m not going to say the begging man was right, wrong…or an ingrate. But it’s certainly a lesson in perception. The beggar might not appreciate how a nickel compounded with more change becomes dollars. Yet, the donor might also overvalue, well, a nickel. After all, he had a right to be hurt that his gift, his last coin, was rejected. But it was a gift, not an obligation or a way to measure another man’s character. Remember that as you give and you receive.

Affirmation:
I give and receive in a Cosmos where I neither need to judge or accept judgment, only discern better.
