“The Elegance of Errors”

One of the supposed highlights of the assembly line model is efficient, error-free production. Manufacturers want to ensure that every consumer gets the same reliable product. They also want the reliability of dollars dropping into their bank accounts, as more consumers believe they’ll have the same as others. Nobody wants glitches.

As Mercury rights his wayward, retrograde passage on Tuesday morning. Or as the glorious Sun in Virgo and cagey Neptune in Pisces stare each other down. Or as the wistful Pisces full moon takes greater hold of our imaginations and dreams, we’ll have to make more space for those glitches. This can lead to an elegant appreciation for errors.

Japanese philosophers have a name for such appreciation. They call it wabi-sabi. It’s the exact opposite of the assembly-line idea. With a line, if something has an error, it should be tossed off the line or fixed. With wabi-sabi, we’re reminded to celebrate impermanence and imperfection.

We are likely to feel and see those imperfections as the full moon rises in the sky. That could prompt a lot of feelings of inadequacy. But life ain’t an assembly line, even if you work on one. We mistake what we can control for a belief that we can control more than we do or even possibly can. The dream of perfection often means we’re not fully awake. As the Serenity Prayer encourages, we must seek the wisdom to know the difference.

Yet, this is a wisdom that often only comes from experience and often hindsight. Attempting to avoid too many errors can also mean not making enough effort. We end up not taking enough risks. Don’t shirk the effort for fear of the errors. That’s where you learn real elegance.

In fact, many performers will tell you how they’ve made mistakes while performing. But their commitment to the effort kept them from drawing attention to the mistake. In fact, many mistakes have led to something inspiring and freeing.

Chip the dream of perfection. Relish and refine the blunders, and drink deep from the bittersweet brew of life.

VIRGO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

You’d be wrong to think that seasoned performers don’t get nervous jitters before they go on. They do…and with good reason. The “jitters” are a natural response for feeling energized by the adrenaline of a fight or flight response. It’s only the discipline of your mind and training that gets them on stage. Don’t fight any jitters you have now. They’re a gift. They tell you that you’re in the game. They’re not a signal that you’re not ready. They’re a sign that it’s time to be ready. What you get wrong now is fodder for improvement another time.

Affirmation:
I accept my jitters as a sign of readiness for more when I’ve prepared for it.

LIBRA
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

The yuckiest and most hollow part of false humility is how it’s fear trying to disguise itself in rags to avoid any glares of disappointment. We can be more forgiving of bravado if only because it’s a better-dressed fear. Do what you do, without the bravado or the humble brag because you fear you won’t please. Some people just love misery and nothing’s good enough for them. You trying to please them might as well be a photo album titled “My Adventures in Masochism.” Your best is your truest gift. When your best can be better, then there’s room for improvement. But you won’t know until you put it out there. Anything else is shucking and jiving.

Affirmation:
I give my best fearlessly without boast or self-abasement.

SCORPIO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Whining Scorpios have amnesia. They’ve likely forgotten how or even to whom they gave away their power. Now they bleat for its return through complaint as if someone else can fix it. If that’s you, then you won’t get your proverbial ovaries or testicles back by going all out for them, though. I know that’s counter-intuitive. See, you still think your power is out there to snatch back from somebody. That’s the problem. Easing into what pleases you and surfaces your joy is how you come back to your power. (Think about it: the powerful attend to their pleasures while the powerless attend more to the pleasures of the powerful.) Pleasure is a revolutionary act. That’s the first thing to remember.

Affirmation:
I reclaim my power by relishing in my pleasure, not my wallowing in displeasure.

SAGITTARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

This week might have a weird rhythm to it. The top half of the week you feel like you’ve finally caught your groove after weeks of feeling out of step. Then you seem to lose some of your mojo and must question everything. Actually, these questions have been nestling in your mind. Now you can’t sweep them under the rug. They’re all in your face, acting like they’re your long-lost children. You’re only overwhelmed with doubt, though, if you’re impatient (and foolish) enough to try to answer all of them at once. You can’t. Slow your roll, in general, and work on the dilemmas that are loudest.

Affirmation:
I leisurely savor the questions cooking in my mind like a meal with multiple courses.

CAPRICORN
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

A reminder: “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” Be sure you’re using your best resources to talk about ideas. Gossip has become easy to do in this age of social media. In every religion, it’s considered a great sin. You don’t have to get your spirit twisted all up about the sin part. But chatting about the affairs of other people often means you’re not focusing on what you need or want to do. It also unties bonds of communal fabric rather than unite. Strive for your greatness. Doing less is the key “sin.”

Affirmation:
I strive for greatness in manifesting ideas, not managing gossip.

AQUARIUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Saturn in birth chart

Shield and protect what you own and cherish. Perhaps you do need a better case for the cell phone you keep dropping. Maybe you should change up your investment portfolio like your “spidey” sense keeps tingling. You don’t have to keep your fears on loop if there’s something you can do to quell them. After you’ve worked the defensive with your finances and resources, it’ll be easier to figure out ways to earn more money. That might include prepping for a raise request or hiking your prices. You’ve learned to offer more. And if you haven’t, it’s time to get in gear for that, too.

Affirmation:
I shield and protect what I own as a run-up for accepting more.

PISCES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Jupiter in birth chart

Over the course of the year, you might not have realized how much rut was in your routines. You’ll probably have great urgency in making those changes. Clear, clean and organize as you can and desire. But be careful of getting rid of too much fast. Like, throwing out assembly instructions before you complete putting something together. Your hurried confidence might mar your clarity on what’s important and valuable now. You’ll save yourself trouble down the line if quiet your mind and tune into your intuition before you roll up your sleeves.

Affirmation:
I receive opportunities for refinement in proportion to as much as I desire to reveal.

ARIES
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mars in birth chart

Folks really don’t know how fussy and finicky you can get. This might be manageable and even enjoyable alone. You can get your bathroom tiles to gleam with all the energy and detail you can muster. That might be harder to do with other folks. Others might not commit to the same level of quality. That’s when frustration, wig-snatching and pettiness can take hold. Instead, focus on your responsibilities or what you can control. Only offer feedback if someone agrees to receive it. Remember, even then you can only lead a stubborn mule to water…

Affirmation:
I reserve the best of my fussiness for my own projects and give others only what they’re willing to accept.

TAURUS
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Venus in birth chart

It probably feels good to be cooking in your own sauce, to feel the heat of your own stewing confidence. It’s been a summer of some important ups and downs. And, you of course, want to pack the downs even deeper in your memory chest. But don’t push too hard. You might have to draw on some of those lessons to help another out. You perhaps better understand what someone’s going through than the person might. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a friend or a stranger. Keep an ear open and come out your reverie a bit to share your wisdom.

Affirmation:
I share the wisdom of my hard knocks to pave a smoother road for others.

GEMINI
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Mercury in birth chart

What you might misunderstand about yourself is that you often need a distraction to focus properly. It takes the edge off and can anchor your awareness, like background music while working. Of course, the distraction can become the focus when it claims too much attention. Or you gather too many distractions. The decoys detract from the real deal. That’s when you must come back to center with your gut. Your gut roots you in your body and feelings. Then you can better line up your cares with your calling.

Affirmation:
I come back to center through my body and feelings when too distracted.

CANCER
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Moon in birth chart

It’s easy to miss the forest for the trees, as the saying goes. But sometimes we’re not even thinking as big as the environment that supports the forest. For example, we can’t ignore how global warming or deforestation has contributed to the increased flooding in cities, like Freetown, Sierra Leone. It’s an object lesson in how a failure to see the even bigger picture can lead to bigger problems. You’re facing a similar dilemma. Don’t become bent out of shape about something relatively small without seeing how it fits in YOUR bigger picture. Fear and greed often keep us small. Faith and gratitude help broaden our view. Work your faith and tally what you’re grateful for if you’re view has gotten too narrow.

Affirmation:
I tap into my faith and gratitude to grasp the bigger, Divine picture in my life.

LEO
Moon, ascendant, Sun or strong Sun in birth chart

Think about the last thing you bought that you really wanted. It doesn’t matter if it was a big or small buy. The key is whether now, with a little time behind you, you can honestly say you genuinely needed it. Sometimes an ego takes more as its deserving than it’s due. Your challenge as a grown ass man or woman is to check your ego’s spending habits. That won’t make you a slave to practicality, though. That’s what Virgo is for. But even the least practical thing you buy should prove satisfying rather than only a hope. If you can’t assure of yourself of that, then hold on to your money. You’ll likely find something better soon.

Affirmation:
I buy what satisfies, not just what my ego demands or wants.
